Ashley, if you want to keep a Venomous Snake that is Native to Georgia, you do not need a permit. Only Non-Venomous Snakes in GA are protected.
However, if you are interested in keeping an Exotic Venomous Snake in GA, that is very different. Permits are issued Only to Businesses, and not to Individuals, and you have to have a Seperate Building and an Liability Insurance Policy.
Getting an Exotic Venomous Permit in GA is very difficult, and only a handfull of folks have them. The fellow to contact is Todd Nims, of the Wildlife Resources Division of the DNR. He is in Social Circle, GA, and can be reached at Todd_Nims@dnr.state.ga.us
or at 770-761-3044.
Hope this helps.

Nothing in SC for now. However, you folks should be "Ever Vigilant" and keep an eye on your Legislators and DNR and proposed law changes.
You do not want for them to sneak a law onto the books as resently happened in Texas when the folks there were not paying attention.
Do not count on the leaders of SCARK in looking out for your interests. Become involved yourselves. Keep up to date on what is happning. You might very well find out about proposed legislation before the folks at SCARK do. And it will be your job to inform them of the proposed legislation and trying to stop it. And you might want to involve the Coastal Carolina Herp Society.
A couple of changes of the Good Old Boy Network in the SC DNR could have profound changes on the laws in your state. Remember, that your state now has very limited reptile laws, and strive to keep it that way.

Justin, you should join the local herp society, and keep up with them on EMail and attend meetings when you can.
The problem is that a Herp Society is usually "one person" running the outfit, and they may or may not keep up with proposed legislation in your state.
That is why you should also check out the online sites fron your State DNR and look for proposed Legislation. And if there is anti-herp stuff on the books, you should try to get folks to the public comment part of the required public meeting. That way you just might prevent a very restrictive law from happening.
But this will take some effort from you. You wil have to review the game and fish section of your State Web Site, and look for public hearing dates and proposed laws. And you will have to get folks notified to go out and protest these laws. It can be a lot of work, but can also be very satisfying.
