If you are under 18 and you dont have any experience of nonvenomous snakes, I would not recommend venomous for first snake.
You should try to find hobbyist and learn from him/her.
And get nonvenomous snakes first (by doing this you will learn the basics)

Andrew:
I know many fine people in the UK for you to train with when the time comes. Keep in mind you need a difficult to get and expensive DWA permit to keep even a "slightly venomous snake". By the way, those "sightly" venomous snakes are only "slightly venomous" because they lack an efficent delivery system. Many of them have toxcicity levels right up there with the hottest snakes on the planet.
For now, read and study as much as you can. Having a good foundation of knowledge will not hurt when you're ready to keep them.
Cheers,
Al

after keeping a coachwhip for some time, i think they would be good to train up and coming hot keepers. if you can keep and maintain them without getting bit, it would be a good start. they are quick, alert, and always ready to stike. they remind me of a cobra when i open the tub, come right out at ya...
your profile says your 11, you've got 7 more yrs before you can keep hot snakes legally. and i didn't get my first hot until i was moved out of my parents house at 21. i tended to have ratsnakes escape when i was young, so getting a hot snake while i lived at home was out of the question...i raised a western diamond back for two yrs before i caught a large canebrake i wanted to keep, also, i still have that first western 12 yrs later...take your time, hots are for the expeirenced. i have had snakes since i was seven, but most were ratsnakes, until the last 5 yrs...
my thoughts jamie...
