Hi,
I was wondering if someone could help me out. I live in AZ, and you are only allowed to own native species of hots, and you can't buy or sell them.
what about purchasing an AZ native snake, from a breeder out of state? I would enjoy collecting them myself, but i was just wondering for those hard to find ones.
thanks,
matt

I'm having trouble finding the exact language for Arizona on line, but laws that prohibit buying and selling usually include language to prohibit importing/transporting/bringing into the state.
I found this:
"No person shall import or transport into the state or sell, trade or release within the state of have in his possession any live wildlife, except as authorized by the (Arizona Game and Fish) Commission. ARS 17.306"
But I can't find the wording of the exceptions. Unless the law/regulation that specifically allows posession also allows importing (which is not likely), I think you're out of luck.

Fortunately, Arizona has a large grouping of people who are interested in keeping reptiles.
You could probably get all of the information that you are looking for from people at these sites:
Arizona Herpetological Society
http://www.azherps.com/index.php
The Phoenix Herpetological Society
http://www.phoenixherp.com/content/
The Tucson Herpetological Society
http://www.arts.arizona.edu/herp/
People from these organizations have been very helpful to me during my two visits to Arizona. They should be able to answer any questions you have.
Good luck and share with us whatever you find out.

I'm curious about one thing. This person was asking about whether or not he could import native AZ species from out of state that may be difficult for him to find. For example, let say he was wanting to obtain a mojave rattler but he's finding them difficult to find in his area. If he were to lets say go to a reptile expo in California or a state out west where hots can be sold, how would anyone know whether he brought it in from California from someone who was selling them, or whether he captured it in his own backyard? Last I checked they weren't do border security checks when you crossed from one state to another.

No one would know. Its a question of morals and ethics, and weather or not you are willing to break the law and think that its worth the risk of getting caught. No one here is going to suggest that anyone breaks any laws. I won't, I suggest that he just spend more time looking for the snakes he wants, and maybe ask around for some good areas to look. And besides state laws, theres always the more powerful Murphys laws that will have a state trooper sitting at the line as you cross back into the state.(LOL) MartyM

I see.
It was just a thought, i wasn't going to break any laws. The whole reason i was asking, is because i see people selling hots, that are from my state <the sellers are out of state> and i wondered if it was a big deal, since they were cb, and not taken from the wild. Even the protected ones like the willardi. Thats all. I wasn't implying that i was going to do anything illegal. I respect and love the herp community, and plan to make a profession out of it one day. I wouldn't do anything to make things worse for us.

I think if you ask around and/or contact some of the people in Karl's post, maybe you'll get some tips on where to find some of the snakes your looking for.Good Luck, MartyM
