I have not heard of that reaction.
I also cannot imagine why anyone would consent to giving you CroFab for a "durissus" bite!
That is absolutely not the antivenom I would want for a "durissus" bite.
That is what Bioclon is for.
CroFab is specifically indicated for some (not all) North American species of Crotalids - NOT South or Central American species.
But, then again, I am not a doctor.
I hope that your recovery is complete and without complication.

durissus are highly neurotoxic and crofab shouldn't even counteract a durissus bite. i thought.
sure it wasn't a dry bite or something other than a durissus? heck, for some timber bites (canebrakes) it doesn't even work so great.
as for the egg issue, it sounds like a normal acute egg allergy. i've been very allergic to eggs my whole life and it would be SEVERE stomach cramps and flu-like symptoms for about 8-12 hours. a good dose of benadryl will help but not stop it completely. thing is, as of last year, i can eat eggs with only a very mild reaction. for the first time in years, i can eat a sausage and egg biscuit and not die lol. maybe it had something to do with a reaction to the a/v.
sure they gave you crofab? it's not uncommon to receive an antivenom for the wrong thing

Jasen, I agree with Karl that you should have never been given CroFab for a C.durissus bite.
If you are going to keep not-native venomous reptiles, you should research what antivenom is needed for them, and put together bite protocol information that you can take with you to the hospital, and hopefully, get the doctors to read. I would also insist that they call a snakebite treatment specialist like Venom 1, Findley Russell, Chris Harper, or even Sean Bush, before you let them start any treatment on you.
As far as the severe reaction to eggs that you have developed, there are numerous cases of individuals becoming extremely allergic to egg protiens following vaccinations. Many vaccinations are grown on egg cultures, and as far as I know, CroFab does not involve eggs in the production of the vaccine, however, it is possible that eggs are used somewhere in its manafacture. Antivenom is in many ways like a vaccination, so it is quite possible that it could trigger protien sensitivity that could cause cardio/respiratory problems, or even anaphylaxis. From what I have read, this is more prone to happen to individuals who have Asthema conditions.
CroFab and other anti-venoms are a witches brew of not only the fractions that nuturlize the venom, but often also contain large ammounts of neomycin, gelatin, and / or Thimerosal and other preservatives.
Because you have developed a protien sensitivity, I would suggest that you obtain a Epi-Pen which contains epinephrine, just incase you have a severe Anaphylaxis reaction. Egg protien is found in many, many foods. It is quite possible that you might find that you have also developed a sensitivity to other protiens.
Best Regards JohnZ

I'll back up Al on this one...something doesn't seem right here. First, I notice the original post says he's a police officer but writes like a teenager - just doesn't add up. Police officers have better self control than telling someone to kiss one of their body parts so I'm guessing its a teenager needing some attention. Secondly, this situation, if its real, shows very poor preparation for a snake bite and shows the constant irresponsibility among the private sector...and we wonder why its so hard to protect our rights?

Let's see some of the medical documentation. Since CroFab was not designed to treat a Tropical RS bite I would think your bill would be much higher since it takes about 20 vials to treat a typical EDB envenomation. Which is one of the 4 venoms used to make CroFab. Put up or shut up.
Keep in mind if you're gonna be rude when someone calls you on something you post. Next time don't post. I could easily delete you and your thread, let this be your warning.
