As youtube and sites like it become more and more popular, it makes me want to share some videos. Spring is coming up and I would like to take some video this year rather then just still shots. Thing is, I have no knowledge, equipment, or experience in web video. First and foremost, what type of camera will I need and what specks does one look at when making a selection? Thanks!

any digicam will work. the better the cam, the better the videos and you'll want a nice, big memory card for longer or many videos.
it simply uploads to their server and they convert it to .flv files, which is the most popular streaming video file type right now.
digital video cameras are usually set up to do videos better with still pics as a secondary function, and cameras are vice versa obviously.
anything over 4mp will be viewable and will probably be perfect for youtube since they can only allow a certain resolution

Look at my BigCatHaven channel that is supposed to be cute and amateurish:
http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=BigCatHaven&p=r
many of these videos were created with my simple old Sony 4 megapixel camera that had a video mode. What is good about this the files are relatively small and easy/fast to upload. Once you get into editing like Microsoft movie maker , it is picky about what files it takes and with some like well knowm mpg, it has no problem with small size, but can not handle big files, so i had to download/buy a digital file converter software.
http://www.deskshare.com/
But if youu get the converting software, you can get any camera no matter what file format it uses and just convert on your computer
Anyway, I just found my old Hi8 camcorder tapes, will digitize them soon, stuff from 1991, OLD, box turtle mating ritual, 3 green tree monitors hanging out togeher, long lost 'treasures', but it will be fun to upload them on YT once I am done with editing, not hard, just time consuming and boring.

a good free file converter to use is SUPER.
a lot of settings but most are simply "pick the file type" and it will handle the rest.

About time for me to explain why sometimes you see weird REXANO Youtubes, like Donkin Donuts and big cats?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kL80jxnjt_o
Lions, Tigers & Cougar Owners?
Answer :
YT always has contest you can enter, so we entered Donkin Donut contest
http://www.youtube.com/DunkinDonuts
idea was to produce a video and answer, ‘How do you keep America Running’?
Winning price is negligible like 500 dollars worth of coffee or something, that is NOT the point of entering.
Point is to give exposure to our cause and show America how big cat/exotic owners keep America running, we had to keep it under 2 minutes, so if u have trouble reading the slides, just pause the player.
In any case, log in and give high ratings and great comments to the video;-)
Maybe you venomous owners can do your own video for the contest, explain how your research is important fo r many diseases facing humankind, and how we can never knwo which young reptile hobbyists will become a researcher later in life? Just an idea.

Hi Chuck:
I use mostly Sony Digicams but other Digital tape cameras will work well too. I use Pinnacle Studio 11 to assemble the video once shot. Works well but you need a super fast PC with lots of memory to turn a bunch of clips into a video. When I first started it took over 10 hour to convert video clips into a video ready to upload. I can now do that in about 10 minutes. The lower the quality you can settle for the faster you can make a video.

If money is not an issue, Adobe premiere is very nice product as well:

Lately we too use Sony camcorders with hard drive, so no disks or tape needed; you dowload movies directly from camcorder to computer.
