I know we've kicked this around but just curious what everyone's favorite venomous herp is. A guest visiting my wildlife center yesterday asked me that question and I had to give that some serious thought. Here's my top three:
1) King Cobra - I've been pyschotic about them since I was a kid and now I get to work with them every day. Life is good.
2) Bushmaster - the most mysterious venomous herp on earth in my opinion and they still make me hyperventilate when I sit there looking at awe of their beauty (especially Lachesis m. rhombeata)...just don't catch one on a bad day:-)
3) Rattlesnake.....any rattlesnake! Another top fav...gila monsters/beaded lizards just because I had a plastic one as a kid and knew I would work with them one day.
Oh yeah, Dendroaspis, Bothrops, Bitis, sheesh, this is harder than I thought:-)
This forum needs to have a little fun every now and then and not take things so seriously. What's everyone else's top three, four, five?

Rob, I would have to pick Shield Nosed Cobras (Aspidelaps scutatus) first, just because of their personality and pugnation !
After that I would go with Bushmasters, (Lachesis ssp), because of the mystique and fame.
Then I would pick the small rattlers, like the Pygmy Rattlesnakes (Sistrurus ssp), the Rock Rattlesnakes (C. lepidus ssp), and of course, the Ridge-Nosed Rattlesnakes (C. willardi).
After that I would have my Coral Snakes (Micrurus ssp.), and the Bandy Bandys (Vermicella ssp.) of
Australia.
Best Regards JohnZ

Rob…
Let’s see, my favorite all-time venomous herps…in order of favoritism…my top 10…
1)Aspidelaps l. lubricus
2)Agkistrodon c. pictigaster
3)Bitis gabonica
4)Cryptelytrops insularis
5)Crotalus adamanteus
6)Bitis parviocula
7)Parias mcgregori
8)Viridovipera stejnegeri
9)Crotalus o. cerberus
10)Sistrurus m. barbouri
…and so on and so forth, ad infinitum.
Actually, to be perfectly blunt and honest, I haven’t seen a venomous herp that I didn’t love !! So, in reality, whatever species I am currently viewing and/or working with is probably going to be my favorite. Each and every one has it’s own unique set of parameters with which you can define and perceive individual markers of beauty, majesty and fascination. JMHO.
Perhaps one of the most difficult questions to answer when you actually begin composing the answer.

That's easy:
First: Elapids
Equal second: Viperines and Crotalines
;-)

UUGGHH! I can't wrap my brain around this one. Every time I type my favorite I reconsider. So here it goes:
1. The one that I am working with at that moment
2. The one that I am looking at behind the glass (how much is that crotalid in the window?)
3. The one whose picture I am drooling over on the internet.
But seriously. This is HARD. I can't put any more thought into this without straining my frontal lobe. I'm going to do something easy, like prepare for environmental lab tonight (quantitative chemical analysis- I can't wait!).

Jeeze thats a hard call.....but I gotta go with...
Zhaoermia mangshenensis - Mangshen's Mt. Pit viper, most cryptic snake on the planet
Pseudohaje goldii - Gold's Tree Cobra, big beautiful, classic elapid look, what's not to like
Daboia russelli russelli - Indian Russell's Vipers, awesome looking, with clean crisp colouration

Ok this is obviously a tough one. So instead of listing all of my favorites which is pretty much everything. I'll list the three that would be the most difficult obtaining.
1. Notechis ssp. - Tiger snakes
2. Naja sagittifera - Andamans cobra
3. Trimeresurus flavoviridis - Habu (not sure on that
genus)
I've never seen those available. There are others that are just very expensive. Like B. parvioculas, Lachesis ssp., banded kings, and the death adders. I'll stop now.
