I think all parameters considered in context an "Ideal First Cobra" would be a Naja Naja Naja - Bicellate or spectacled Indian Cobra; this is based on my experience of working with Oxiana, Kaouthia and Ophiophagus.
Just make sure you have the right anti-venin I know that the thai redcross cobra serum is ineffective for some strains of subcontinental elapids.

CSL Tigersnake will usually work on King Cobra. Personally I would suggest N. padilla for a first Naja due to the less likely fatal bite.

You are likely to receive a volume of vastly different opinions on this question. It really depends on various factors, one of which being the disposition of the individual specimen. Many start with Naja kaouthia, however, some specimens can be highly spunky, and not be a great choice for a first Naja. Another important factor is the availability of antivenin in your region. Probably the most important factor is your past experience with cobras. If you have never handled a cobra before, then you should certainly do so under the close supervision of an experienced keeper, before acquiring a specimen yourself.
A suitable alternative to starting out with a true Naja would be any member of Aspidelaps. They are significantly slower and less lethal, and allow you to become accustomed to keeping Elapids.
