I need help determining what type of snake I have a photo of, I have been told it is a cotton mouth but as the snake was well over five feet I am doubtful. I do not know how to post a photo.

Gary,
You can upload the photo album here under the section titled "snakes for identification" and let us know here that you have done so, as it will not show up on the site until approved by a site manager.
A much quicker way would be to upload the photo to "your Profile" on the site here, and it will show up immediatly for everyone here to view.
You could also post the photo on something like Photobucket, and tell us here the link.
Or, if you like, EMail me a copy of the photo at jzegel@mindspring.com
We need to know where the snake was found, what State, nearest Town, etc.
If the snake is 5 feet long, it is not very likely that it is a Cottonmouth.
Best Regards JohnZ

Gary, since you have not EMailed a photo of the suspected Cottonmouth, or uploaded it to the site, I guess you do not want it identified anymore.
If the snake was over 5 feet long like you suggested, it was Not a Cottonmouth if it was not as big around as your calf. Cottonmouths that long will be that big around. You have not told us where you live yet, so we can only guess. The snake you found could be a ratsnake, or a water snake, etc....
Many rednecks are quick to label any snake a Cottonmouth. If you want it identified, then post a photo of it here, and we can help.
Bese Regards JohnZ
