Read a fact sheet about the Fer-de-lance
GLOUCESTER (WAVY.com) -- The Gloucester County Sheriffs Office is searching for a venomous snake that's very much out of place.
According to a news release, the snake is a Fer-de-lance, and the size is unknown at this time. This snake is considered the most dangerous snake of Central and South America, and causes more human deaths than any other American reptile.
We're told that the Sheriff's office received a call at around 9:30 Thursday morning regarding a venomous snake that was taken from the Super Wal-Mart parking lot. The snake was in a vehicle parked at Wal-Mart, and was supposed to be inside of a box.
The sheriff says that at this point, very little information is known about this incident. However, for public safety concerns, the Sheriff's Office is asking that anyone with information regarding this to contact them.
Anyone with information can call the Gloucester County Crime Line at 804-693-COPS or the Sheriffs Office directly at 804-693-3890. The Gloucester County Crime Line is offering a reward of up to $1000.00 for information leading to the recovery of this snake.

Well, judging from the area code posted with the phone number I am assuming this is from Richmond VA. Nothing like a lost venomous snake in the capitol area of a state where the law makers reside. I wont be surprised at all when the ax comes down on VA keeping regulations.

Wally Worlds around here have lots of CC Cameras in the parking lots so the veracity of this claim could be determined by checking the tape. Gloucester is a rural county that is rapidly turning suburban much to the chagrin of the natives. This particular WW casued a bit of a row when it was proposed (took out some wetlands and whatnot if I remember correctly).

You would make a handsome profit if you turned in your privatley held Bothrops spp. for the $1K reward.

They are not an expensive snake, however, they are not commonly kept, as they get large, are fast, are often tempermental, and highly venomous.

Yeah, & they have the attitude of an ex-wife. Only snake that I know of that gives Bill Haast pause. If whoever stole it is not a serious snake person, they are in for a lot of excitement.

this is an area near the Tidewater area of Va. Beach and Norfolk. it has a lot of the earmarks of an AR hoax to introduce legislation in VA. API fingerprints are all over this... annonymous call about missing highly venomous snake... no way to verify... no snake... no owner... no one has seen the snake... media reports deadly snake on the loose... Petopalooza with Roarks reptile Safari to be in town next week... Va has no laws against exotic reptiles... i smell Nicole Paquette from API. in 2005 2 tiger cubs were found on the side of the road in NC just prior to the intro of API legislation... no danger but big media hype... kansas 2006 two lion cubs same scenario prior to intro of API bill... WA, serval cubs... 2007 NC, IN and IA dozens of baby alligators released. this is very fishy. my guess is that nothing will ever be found, press will make a big deal and API will usher in their bill.
