If you are really in Alaska, you may want to consider discussing treatment for venomous bite(s) with the toxicologist in your local medical facility to see what experience he or she has with snake bite treatment, before you get into venomous keeping any further. My guess is that they have NO experience and NO medicine for you, so unless you're stocking your own meds, and most people aren't, copperheads and cottonmouths would be about as extreme as I'd be willing to get for venomous snakes. I'd also be prepared to lose a few fingers or the use of a hand if I were bitten, and we all can be bitten.
A copperhead bite will probably not kill you, if you are in decent health, but it can. You may also want to consider Mangrove snakes as an alternative to keeping "extreme" venomous like Boomslangs or cobras. Mangroves are stunningly beautiful snakes, and they are fairly easy to keep, along with being hardy....
Good luck....

Pending the swelling in lack of blood flow to the area. First off, IT HURTS LIKE HELL> Man let me tell ya it stings and turns black very fast. Doubt if it would kill ya unless you go into shock or have a reaction but either way, its gonna burn for sometime and you will have nerve damage for a while (still typing with my middle finger months later.

Im right there with Jared,I took a shot from a copper and Pig in my day, and by far the copper hurt much worse. I'ts like a bee magnified 5 times with all the swelling of a WDB. It isn't gonna kill like the WDB, but you feel like your gonna die if he gets ya good. GD

Short story;
When I was young-NOT yesterday- a dog I had caught a copperhead and as she attempted to kill it, it bit her in the face. She slung it and it hit me. As I tried to fight it off, I, too, got bit. My hand swelled till I thought I'd swell all over and die. Pain was searing. After a few days, the swelling receded, but to this day, my knuckles hurt alot. My dog,on the other hand, suffered far worse. Her entire head swelled and it looked as though someone had slit her throat from chin to chest with a razor. Months later and after alot of attention, she came through. Strangely, she was never the same mentally.She had a beautiful disposition before and, afterward, was unapproachable.
I had never seen a snake before that and that incident is what got me involved with them.
That is just an idea of what could happen.I honestly cannot explain why the dog wasn't right afterward..trauma maybe. Or maybe I'm just not right anymore???????
