Keeping Exotic Animals Is Cruel
(Created: Monday, May 19, 2008 10:24 AM EDT)
Editor: It's surprising that anyone is allowed to continue to buy, sell or keep exotic and dangerous animals as “pets” [“Ban on Venomous Snakes Leads County Board Agenda,” May 15]. An ordinance to prohibit this practice is both necessary and long overdue.
People all over the country have been seriously injured - some fatally - by their pet vipers, pythons and alligators.
Fueled by the lucrative exotic pet industry, almost anyone can buy tigers, lions, bears, reptiles and other exotic species. Infant animals are often prematurely removed from their mothers and denied the natural socialization process required for normal development.
Many languish at the end of chains or in tiny cages; others die in the shuffle from one owner to the next.
These animals are often bought on a whim, and are as quickly disposed of when their specialized needs become burdensome. Snakes, iguanas and other animals who have become “inconvenient” are tossed out like trash; many languish in fear, hunger and thirst before dying or being killed. Others wreak havoc on local ecosystems.
For your sake and theirs, don't succumb to the temptation of purchasing exotic animals. Our nation's animal shelters are filled with millions of dogs and cats who are dying for a good home.

"Our nation's animal shelters are filled with millions of dogs and cats who are dying for a good home"
I wonder if she recognizes the fallacy of her argument. Yes, people who are unqualified to own them can buy, say, a cobra on a whim (most of these people are barely qualified to tie their own shoes). Does she want them to go buy a dog instead? Or a cat? So let's give all the idiots cats. That way they can neglect the cats, who will leave their home to terrorize all forms of small wildlife.
Also, people have children on a whim (or worse - with no prior thought at all). Many of these children end up in an underfunded overworked social system "dying for a good home". Let's also ban procreation until all SPCA dogs and cats and all DSS children have a good home. Then the world will be a better place.

Lol excellent point! Lets give them all pitbulls!
BTW it is PETA policy (i have read it) that keeping "slaves" (peta has a great list of terms they require staff to use when dealing w press) is far worse than having them euthanized. Just ask um about all the good work they did in elizabeth city taking peoples dogs to "good homes" euthanizing them, and dumping them in the piggly wiggly dumpster. They REALLY dont want anyone owning anything, furthermore, if you read into there goals, ideally they want to close all research institutions, public exhibits, and all zoos. If you genuinely care for animals, wouldnt u be able to see the flaws in that?
