Went to check on my African Short Haired Rats today, and found one of the cages that used to have about 13 or 14 rats to only have 6 of them, LOL !
A couple of weeks ago, I removed a Black Ratsnake from that garage that had found its way in.
I re-located it to a horse barn, where I hoped it would stay.
I am guessing that same ratsnake made it back and had a good feeding on the African Rats, LOL !
I am looking for him now, he should be there somewhere in the garage.
He probably did not go far with $35.00 worth of rodents in his belly, LOL !
Best Regards JohnZ

I had a yellow rat get out in my snake my snake room once and slip into a mouse cage, where he ate a whole litter of fuzzies and a few hoppers and decided to just camp out until he got hungry again... Of course, he couldn't have gotten out if he wanted to...

No, they are plastic bins from the office supply store. The tops are a frame of 1X2's that fits over the outside of the bin, with a section of 1/2 inch wire mesh screwed to it.
They are convenient and stackable, but have one drawback (other than allowing ratsnakes in). The 1/2 inch holes are just a little too big... Mice go through a stage where they are big enough to jump up to the food bin but still small enough to squeeze throuh the 1/2 inch holes. 99% of time they stay there on the top of the cage, but occasionally they go exploring.
1/4 inch mesh is too small for the adults to get at the food. I've found a manufacturer of 1/3 inch mesh on the web but no suppliers around here that carry it.

Larry, thanks for the information.
I might just have to try building some of those rodent cages.
Sure would be nice to raise enough rodents so that I did not have to purchase them commercially.
