If the aspen shavings had poison for beetles or other insects, it sure could explain the deaths of the animals. If they were transported across state lines, they might have been fumigated somewhere along the way.
Unfortunatly, it would be very expensive to have this tested, and a necropsy of the animals might not tell you much.
I do not like using shavings of any sort in snake cages.
