i'm planning to buy a ball python but i was told you can get one cheap at a show. my question is do the retailers take care of their snakes prior to selling them like a pet store would? or would i be better off buying one from a stable buisness where if this snake is sick or dies or has ticks they'll take care of it. a show on the other hand is in the next city the next week usually a state or two away.

Trey, those dealers at the reptile shows are probably the same people suppling ball pythons to the pet shops.
Some deal in freshly imported pthons, and others deal in captive born and raised pythons.
With rare exceptions, pet shops are terrable places to buy reptiles, unless that is all they sell. The people who work at pet shops usually know very little about proper care for reptiles, dogs, cats, fish, etc.
Also, you mentioned a cheap price. Well, the cheapest ball pythons will be newly imported ones, and those are the most likely to die. They can harbor parasites, and other health problems, and are often ill tempered.
A captive born and raised snake might cost a bit more, but will be worth the difference in quality. You should ask the dealers at the reptile show if the snakes were imported, or born and raised in captivity, and only purchase a captive born snake.
Hope this helps.
Best Regards John Z

It depends on the dealer. Some are just out to make a buck, in any way possible. Many of the Ball Pythons they sell are imported, wild-caught or "farmed" animals that will often be heavily infested with parasites and/or will be difficult to acclimate and persuade to eat. There are, however, many legitimate and responsible Ball Python breeders who know each and every animal they sell, in terms of age, genetics, shedding, feeding, etc. and will stand behind their animals. A lot of them have booths at reptile shows, along with the less-than-reputable dealers. You can expect to pay more for a snake from a breeder, but at least you know what you're getting. Reptile shows have a wide range of vendors, some honest, some not so much so. I've seen one dealer hawking hatchling Nile monitors to a family of total newbies, who'd never had ANY herps before, and who had small kids, by telling them that it wouldn't get much bigger if they kept it in a small tank and only fed it crickets for its entire life, that it would stay very tame and sweet and didn't need any special equipment to care for it, just a 10-gallon aquarium with a top! He got mad with me for immediately speaking MY mind and cluing them in, which cost him a $10.00 sale, but my conscience would not allow such a blatant lie to stand unchallenged! At the same show, I saw another dealer refuse to sell a Rosehaired tarantula to a teen who told him and his buddies that if the spider ever so much as reared up at him(a threat display), he'd "stick its A## in the microwave". As with any situation where people are selling merchandise, it's "Caveat Emptor".

trey,
I will be at the columbia show I don't know what you consider to be a cheap ball. But I do know I will have a dozen or so C.B. 50% poss alb hets for $45.00/ea.They will of coarse come with complete shed and feed records including hatch dates. These guy's were Captive Bred right in nearby lexington SC.or you can buy a fresh import for probably $15.00. either way you probably will fare better than you will from a pet store if your locale pet stores are anything like most of our locale shops.
See you at the show
Joe
