It is a prescription medication. It is a little more than $1000 per vial. If you are in the US, it should be stocked at the local hospital.
If you are outside of the US, research national and local laws pertaining to prescription ,medications and pharmacy regulations.

Pardon me for forgetting the shelf life info - 2 years for CroFab. It comes two vials to a box.

And to add to it, a prescription or copay card won't help with the price like it would with other drugs.

I forgot to mention Bioclon Antivipmyn, considerably cheaper at this point. Perhaps easier to obtain. Should provide a wide range of coverage. If South American Crotalidae are part of your plans, perhaps you should purchase Instituto Butantan Anti-Crotalico (Brazil) as well. Both of these products are less expensive than Crofab. If you have a collection that ranges from North to South America, venom does vary geographically, between species, ontologically, etc.

its incredibly expensive for your average hobbyist, for a single bite its not unheard of for 20+ vials, and with the correct training, mentoring and safety precautions the risk of a bite is minimised, you have to weigh up the cost of spending $20,000 at least every two years on something that with the right safety steps you may never need to use, personally that would be taking a large chunk of my salary, and I couldnt justify it.

CroFab is lyophilized, yet the expiration is still two years. Some of the liquid antivenoms have shelf life of five years.
The medication will work after expiry, however, there is some loss of potency through time.

"The medication will work after expiry."
While that is well known, what I wonder is would a Doctor still used anti venom if it was past it's expiration date ? You would hope that they would, but I can see some of them wasting hours trying to get anti venom that was in date, and refusing to use the expired stuff.
I would hate to see someone not geting treatment while they were waiting for fresher anti venom, but in this litigation happy society, one has to wonder what the Doctor would do in a case like that.
Also, it is interesting that some interprising veternarians will obtain the expired anti venom from hospitals for use on dogs, cats, and livestock.
That way, they can save the lifes of peoples pets, and not have to charge the thousands of dollars for fresh anti venom.
Best Regards John Z

I suppose that depends on the doctor and the severity of the patient's condition. The antivenom provided by zoos to patient's bitten by exotic snakes is often expired, kept due to the expense and time required to acquire new stock. It is not subject to the same scrutiny concerning expiration as FDA approved medications, but entails another set of reporting requirements if and when used.
He is in South Africa, perhaps the citizens of his country are not as litigious as those in the US.
