I like to give arboreal snakes an elevated basking place that is warmer than the ambient temperature in the cage to allow them to thermoregulate. You can use a spot light, heat tape (on a rheostat or other voltage controlling device) or any other form of heat that provides "spot" heat. Heating the entire enclosure, or heating from underneath for arboreal animals, limits the amount of opportunities for the snake to choose the optimum temperature, within a predescribed range of course, for more natural body temerature control. There are many ways to accomplish the objective of providing optimum comfort for the animal in a cage, and I'm sure there are as many opinions about the best way to accomplish that goal as there are keepers, but I like to heat from above... the same way the sun does it...

I keep a White Lip viper alaboris what seems to work best is overhead heat controlled of course. I use a ceramic heater in a standard 8'' dome ceramic fixture not the cheap plastic. I place the heater on one end of the enclosure this allows the alaboris to move under or way from the heat on the branch. Make sure the viper can move away from the heat if needed. Basking lamps work well during the day but they waste energy ceramic heaters hold heat for long periods. Undertank heaters will help warm wet substrate to keep humidity high but add very little to overall heat.

I don't worry about thermoregulation with arboreal vipers as much as I do with other species. But if you want to provide a gradient you should do so with a radiant (overhead) heat source of some type.
You can still use an under-tank-heater but I recommend you put it under the area of the cage where the water bowl sits. This will increase the humidity in the cage.
