Found this little fellow coiled up in a mud puddle, he was somewhat docile for a water snake. What I want to know is, dose this snake look like a Yellowbelly or Redbelly Water Snake to ya’ll? If by chance this is a Redbelly, it would mean that their ranges are moving. This little fellow was caught in Limestone Co., AL.
Aww sorry, the Photos are on page 9 in the Snakes For Identification section of the Photo Album.
Look closely at the belly Photo, the color of the Belly is very “ODD” to be a Yellowbelly.
Thanks in advance

Hi Wally-
I thinks this is a juvenile/sub-adult N. e. flavigaster with just a lot of orange in the belly and still a good bit of its pattern showing. It's not unusual to find yellow bellies with some orange in the belly, but the reverse is not true (i.e. you don't see a lot of yellow on a redbelly). There's still a lot more yellow than orange in this snake, especially on the chin, and on the belly in the lower left photo. Red bellies are what we have a lot of here on the east coast, and they are solidly orange-red on the ventral side and chin (and always remind me of the A&W Root Beer colors).
All the best-
Frederick
