I'm traveling to Myrtle Beach and I was wondering if there were still any decent shops that dealt hots. When I lived in NC I knew of a few, but that was 3 years ago.

I don't know of any shops that deal in venomous snakes, and I've lived here in SC all my life. Most don't keep snakes anyway, and those that do limit their inventory to popular pet species that can be obtained cheaply and easily, like Corns and Ball Pythons. Horry County, where Myrtle Beach is located, actually prohibits selling reptiles in commercial shops, unless they've repealed that law. I know there was some controversy with it when it passed because it also prohibited selling hermit crabs, a "staple" of tourist trap shops. Reptile shows that allow "hots", or private breeders/collectors, are going to be your only source unless you go out and collect them yourself.

No, not that I'm aware of, and I've visited pet shops in many cities around the state. Like I said, you would have a real challenge just finding pet shops that carry any reptiles beyond the usual pet shop fare in this state. Unless it's a specialty reptile shop, it's unlikely that the employees would have enough experience and knowledge to be able to maintain a venomous collection. Even though sales of hot herps are legal in SC, the risk of having them in a shop that is open to the public, several days a week, and is staffed by people who know little about animals, period, let alone hots, would be too great. It's been MY personal experience that on the occasion that a really good, privately-owned pet shop opens, anywhere in SC, it doesn't last because the customer base just isn't there to support it.
