This is not going to be popular comment about Joseph Slowinski but I found him to be a complete jack ass! He seemed to be quite the lawbreaker and for stealing the snakes from the Brazilian scientist was unethical as you can get.I didn't much care for the way he treated herps as well; Freezing live specimen by the dozens. I know it was for science {yeah yeah} but it didn't jive with me. His drinking and complete life behavior was unexceptible. He used to be one of my heros until I read the book. O'shea is still my hero....

If O'Shea is your hero, then your living in DisneyLand.
O'Shea stages all of his "found" snakes. Like the Lachesis m. rhombeata, yeah right! LOL!

O'shea is not catching pigmy's and killing them for a laugh and having bartenders cook them up for him. He seemed to have no respect for the snake, just the science of them. O'shea did not stage most of his shows and has never harmed an animal in any way for supposed science just to classify them in a group. Slowinski was believed to have killed hundreds of seprents to enhance university collections! Bad stuff brother.

Almost any TV show will have staged events of finding snakes "in the wild."
That way, the cameras, lights, and microphones can be set up in advance.
And in many cases, the snake came from a local zoo or collector, and might have spent time in a ice chest to cool it down some before the filming.
Without that, It would be almost impossible to film some of the footage that is shown.
I do not mind seeing shows that make the person look like they just "found" the snake, as long as they do not lie about it if someone asks them. They should be willing to say, hey, we set it up, but thats TV !
I once talked with Mark O'Shey in a live chatroom, and he spent about 2 hours answering folks questions. He seemed like a really genuine guy. He told us of the areas he would be going to next, and of the projects he was working on, and what might be coming out on TV.
The main reason for a reptile show on TV should be Education. If they have to stage stuff to look like it was in the field, so be it. I have heard that Steve Irwin often had a crew of like 12 people filming and recording. But when you watch the video, you think it is just him and Sue out there in taipan land, all on their own.
In the wild, it is almost impossible to film things first hand as they happen. If you try, it will wind up looking like Herpin with Dylan, on UTube, and not as Mark O'shey Adventures on Discovery.

John hit it on the head.
In T.V. business, time is money - plain and simple. When I did a segment with Animal Planet they wanted to do some field shots so I previously collected some of the native herps and we "staged" the shots. Camera/producer crews cost BIG bucks and its just not possible to meander around and say "Snake!". There's only one place in the U.S. where I know that I can find snakes by the gobfulls in a very short amount of time, otherwise, you have to stage the shots. I don't have a problem when they are field collected animals from that particular area where you show the animals in their natural surroundings.
Mark O'Sea is a great guy - real passionate and tells it like it is. As far as books go, I haven't read the book about Slowinski but remember that books oftentimes embelish the truth and unless you know the guy personally, I think it would be difficult to start casting stones.

Rob,
Your right on.
I have met Mark and talked with him for awhile, a nice guy. But...those shots/snakes ARE staged.
John, your post is great also.
I recently did a segment at my house with cobra's for Discovery Channel. They shot for 6 hours. This should be out in the fall. It's called "Extreme Forensics"

Guys all the shots are staged, all the way back to corwin, irwin etc. ALOT of the set ups, esp se us which Many members of the site have worked on were set up. This is part of the buisness. Also, professional presentation. Alot of people on here talk of herpers like they know them, when in actuality if many of these people got to know those who try to uphold images of themselves they would find that they have been living in fantasyland. The image often presented to the public is often nothing like the person who is just that, presenting an image. my .02,

Lemme rephrase, Not ALL are staged but a large amount of interactions are deliberately set up in order not to waste time running around looking for a certain shot. again, not ALL but some.
