I was supposed to drive up to Rock Hill, SC, almost two hours away from where I live, to stock up on frozen rodents for my snakes, but I had to put it off due to the gas shortage. I managed to fill up Friday afternoon before the station ran out, and could have gotten there and back on one tank, but I've got a 45-minute one-way drive Monday morning just to get to work, and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to find a station still selling gas, or one I could afford to buy from, and wouldn't have enough left to make it to work and back on Monday, so the snakes will have to make do with left-over mice in the freezer. Hopefully by next weekend the refineries will back up and running, since the latest news on them is that they sustained very little damage from Ike.

I didn't have a problem filling up in NE GA. The price went up some, but thank the media scare for that. It'll come back down. Marty

I haven't done any serious road cruisin' in well over a year, due mainly to gas prices. Any snakes I've caught on the road were purely incidental...which is why my vehicles always are equipped with Midwest tongs, snake hooks and of course, at least half a dozen sturdy pillow cases, the presence of which are always fun to explain to people. Most of the snakes I've caught within the past year have all been with the help of my trusty pack of "Sapphire Snake Hounds", aka Blue Jays, who will bay up a snake better than a pack of Catahoula Curs on a wild boar! The only exceptions were a young Canebrake who sauntered out from underneath my Studebaker as I was waxing it for a show, a four-foot E. obsoletta who literally fell out of a pecan tree and landed on my head while I was feeding the dogs(always an interesting experience), and the baby "Greenish" Rat Snake that had my Principal and the school's secretary "treed" on top of the desk in the office until I arrived to "save the day".

Try motorcycle cruising. Most bikes get 50+mpg. There are even a few that get up to 70mpg and can still maintain highway speeds.
Currently, the best place I've found to buy a used bike is on www.Craigslist.com
Search the larger cities. I search Atlanta's craigslist. You definitely won't get a good deal at your local dealership. The best dealership prices I've found in the southeast is at www.SoutherHonda.com which is in Chattanooga.

If I lived more out in the country, a motorcycle might be a good solution to the gasoline cost issue.
With all of the crazy drivers around Lawrenceville, I would not even consider it. Way too many folks here drive around with a cell phone in one hand, and are all over the roads.
Best Regards John Z
