haha makes yall feel any beter (you younger guys) i'm 24 with only about 15 years of note worth exprence, an i now have chuck on speed dial! haha not a day goes by that i don't talk to him, an ask at least 1 question about any of the snakes i keep. you never stop learning. when you do your dead plain an simple.
I wont get into the 30 year exprence thing haha- espiclay since i got told by a guy with supoed 30 year exprence on anouther site that "i wasn't a hot keeper" mmmmm yep, all my snakes are cooooool cats! haha now on this site, i am more apt to belive those with 30 years exprence because they are not in the "oo look at me i got 30 years exprence so i'm god" crowd. instead those with the real exprence show it when they offer advice an try an help in anyway they can to us younger keepers. Yep I lump myself in with the younger kids ;).
I've learned alot even from just searching the site, an reading older posts. which i try to do before i post a question though i may forget on ocassion. even when i don't have anythin specific that i need or want to know i still search an read. You never know what tidbit of info could be in that caresheet, or that article etc that you have read so many times on other sites that you could recite it by heart. It happens ;).
I do have to admit jumping from copperheads into EDB's is a prety big jump. it's something that should be thought long an hard about. Espiclay considering the size an temperment of these animals espiclay when full grown. It's not a mater of keeping one species of hot then moving to the big boys. working your way up the ladder to me is the best thing. Take it slow. Go from a copperhead to say a cottonmouth from there to say a species of rattler that's smaller an perhaps easier to manage. Not sayin start from the smallest or anythin, but theres plenty of individuals on here who can offer advice about prety much anythin an everything. Maybe they can offer advice about which species of rattler is best for those wishing to wade into keeping buzztails.
Me, I joined the rattler group with a pair of Canebrakes. I do plan to add an EDB before long myself along with several other species.
It's not a matter of do you have the courage to keep them either, but rather, do you truely feel that you have the exprence, an the knowledge to deal with these animals. Do they intimidate you in anyway? do you doubt your skills in anyway shape or form?
I myself am not afraid to admit that once i open my rattlers cage, an start to remove one of them my adrinline strts to pump, an once i have him or her secured in anouther container i am usualy shaking like a leaf. Do they scare me? hell yes, an I aint afraid to admit it. Am I imtimidated by the prospect of teh exprence an care they require? No. I am confident in my own skills an I know my limits an boundries, an I'm not afraid to ask for help or advice.
:) This is an awsome site, an a great forum. The knwoledge of the users here weither book learned or hands on is invaluable. in any way shape or form, we are all hear to learn.
oops that turned into a bit of a ramble didn't it? haha

you know i have long been a fan of Muffdaddy. sometimes he may do things i dont agree with but we all have our opinions...but to be honest the majority of his info is good and helpful to a VERY large number of people. it seems to me that many of the herpers 30 and older who have been in this hobby dont like him and most of the herpers 30 and under LOVE him to death. since you gave your opinion i will give mine. and it seems to me that many of the older herpers are threatened by him becuase he's the "new guy" taking this hobby (for good or bad) by storm. I hear people saying rude subjective things about him but nothing of any real substance like giving examples, except hes fat, this or that. Im around thirty and hes certainly not the SAVIOR people say his is but, he did fight the Arlington ban. the kid has heart, just alot of growing up to do. remember i think hes only 23. im sure in a few years things will be different hopefully in a good way. but as i said his SAVS are awsome!
that being said. im not here to talk about him rather the EDR. if people in here think that this snake is not a good choice or is too much of a jump. what would you all recommend?

Stealth,
In some ways I want to recommend a Timber or "canebrake" as Celeste has, and in many ways I do not. They can be a little tricky husbandry wise at times, and like with all snakes, SOME can be rather unpredictable and nasty. But the majority of timbers I've had and handled from other collections were ussually very calm. This is not to say that IF bitten, Timber bites should be taken lightly (see the article on this site from a while back).
I have just recently jumped into the Sistrurus genus, and find the Massasauga rattlers to be VERY intellinegent compared to other pitvipers of their size. Mine is VERY calm, but does not hook very well.
Any crotalus or sistrurus though, to me, display at lest some universal behaviors.. "rattlesnake" behaviors. And, may help you later with an EDB, but... massy - EDB is still a big "jump" in my opinion.
Maybe going from a Sistrurus to somthing else in the Crotalus genus later would be best.
Compared to copperheads, under alot of circumstances, the Massasaugas are even less of a "potential danger" as has been dicussed here recently.
I know alot of the guys here can give better advice, but those are my thoughts. I just simply wouldnt jump from a copper to an EDB.. Forgive me if it was already posted, but, was the copper the only pitviper you've kept?
Tace Care.

Craig, it does seem like a Soap Opra from time to time, dosen't it, LOL.
Stealth, as far as moving up from Copperheads, you should consider a Dusky Pygmy Rattlesnake, or a Western Pygmy Rattlesnake. Not a Carolina Pygmy Rattlesnake, as they are fragile and more difficult to keep. Another option would be one of the "Bamboo" Vipers. They are pretty snakes, and you have to be carefull with them to avoid getting bitten. And, if they are captive born, you will greatly avoid the problem with parasited that the wild caught ones have.
Jumping from Copperheads to a Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake is not a good move. Easter Diamondbacked Rattlesnakes are the Aristocrats of rattlesnakes, and can be very picky and difficult to keep alive.
If you must have a large rattlesnake, go with a Western Diamondbacked Rattlesnake. They are as tough as a Texas boot, and hard to kill in captivity. Also, their behavior will keep you on your toes and make you a better keeper. A large Western can kill you just as dead as a bolt of lightning from the sky. So, be carefull if you go that way.
I will not get into the Muffdaddy part of this thread if I can help it.
Best Regards John Z

"Your desire to not fill out your profile and the things you have said make you seem to be the latest web incarnation of muffdaddy".
And we all know you can never have too many of those. For the record, Stealth, the only way any of the veteran keepers here feel threatened by your hero muffdaddy is because his bs is liable to get someone bitten, at a time when any and all bites are the last thing the hobby needs.

Completely agreed John,
But one must understand where I MYSELF AM COMMING FROM.
Well, since Stealth explained a bit more, I am coming to understand, IN A SENSE, what he means. Although I can assure him, the EXPERTS here have no reason to feel any "threat" ESPECIALLY from muffdady. This site is about education is it not? The "threat" of any experience level one has over another seems to be the mentality of those out for the "coolness" of this hobby.
But yes, enough of him, he got the attention he wanted out of this site, and deserves no more.
John, in all honesty, from my perspective, even while I feel I am more adept to study and keep the animals I do at my age than most others my age, I consider that comment a direct attack on the qualifications and knowledge of people such as yourself, and many others here.
Maybe this is only based on the side of Nick we have seen from his activity here, but I still feel very much even PERSONALLY offended because of all you guys have been able to help me with.
But, it is pointless to dispute such things. I guess that’s why we are all here, to get GOOD, FACTUAL advice. I hope I did not stir things up too much.
Take Care.

wow, i should have made some popcorn for this one lol.. a copperhead to a edb would not be the best idea like some others said you want to build up the experience first. as for the muffdaddy thing i see a lot of people saying hes a legend, hero, that he has done a lot for the hobby. but the one that is always saying it is him saying it lol so i guess its true because hes never told a lie.
as for his advise its far from being what the people here would tell you he hasn't kept reptiles for more then 2 years yet gives out advise on venomous likes hes been doing it for 20 years.
have you seen how he acts on his videos, he likes to play with guns as well as giving bad info, its funny how you said people call him a hero and he has done lot for the hobby. if that was true he probably wouldn't be banned from every forum he goes on. right?
on another note i loved his radio show where he cried about me saying i emailed him all the time when he emails me lol and how he said he came here and it made the site famous and he was happy to do that for us lol. he also told me how he talks to tons of people here on the phone every day because they don't want to tell anyone they like him lol... someone said hes good for a laught for two but other then that i would not listen to a word he said
I'm sure ill get another email about my jealousy lol
get something a little less dangerous, listen to the people here they know what they are talking about and wont steer ya wrong.
