William,
A recent thread on this site was recently side-tracked, as all forum ussually are.
This started a little discusion about the use of "natural" materials. Almost nothing I use for my enclosures is troe bought. (Rocks, branches, moss, leaf litter, dirt, etc.)
Of course is there a decent risk of parasite, and is probably the biggest reason alot of keeper dont bother for the "natural look", or keep their setups minimal.
I posted my technique for treating things found outside in the thread below. This has allways worked for me, and I REARELY ever have parasite problems, and never severe.

When useing store bought "dirt" I buy potting soil that has no added fertilizers. Its usually cheap.I mix it with peat moss to keep it fluffier so it doesn't get packed down, and throw in some cypress mulch.(just a little)Sprinkle around a few oak leaves and thats it.I've also mixed in some sand in a coulple to keep the dirt "looser".I choose not to use live plants in anything but my terrarium that my coral snakes are in. You can find some very real looking ferns and other artificial plants that work fine and all you have to do is maybe wash them off once in a while. Take care, Marty
