i am pretty sure that where i live hospitals dont encounter venomous snake bites every day, especially the african species that are available in the pet trade.so what would be your advice(anyone) on how to find out exactly what resources are available in my area incase i get bitten? and without drawing to much attention to myself when trying to find out. it is my worse fear to be bitten, go to the hospital, and have the doctors standing around me wondering what to do. or have them wasting time researching while i am dieing.

It is best to have the numbers of experienced EMT/Paramedic/Doctors on hand. Antivenin is expensive and has a short shelf life, and requires prescriptions many times, but ideally you should have your own stock of antivenin it at all possible when dealing with exotics such as the African species you speak of.

i am pretty sure that atleast 90 percent of private "venomous" snake keepers do not stock their own anti-venom. i also know that most people that get bitten usually end up useing their local zoos supply of anti-venom. i guess what i am wondering is, are those my only two options(get my own, or use the zoos)?

Danny, yep, those are pretty much your options.
Unless you want to wait 5 or 6 hours for an airplane to deliver antivenom from Venom 1 in Florida.
The SAIMR Antivenom for the snakes you are keeping is really not all that expensive. You will need an import liscense and a doctors prescription.
Information about buying your own Antivenom is on this site in the File Library, and by searching past questions in the Experts Section.
Having a few vials of SAIMR on hand would not cost you all that much, and just might save your life. It at least could buy some time while Antivenom arried from other sources.
What is going to happen if the day you happen to get bitten, most of the folks in the nearest Zoos are on vacation ?
A few years back, a fellow in this Country managed to get bitten by a Tiapan, on the same day that 911 happened. If you remember, most of air traffic in the US was shut down that day. A lot of effort went into getting Antivenom for him that day. It did happen, but it almost took a Presidential Order to make it happen.
If you have the money to spend on Gaboon Vipers, you should also spend the few hundred dollars that it would take to have your own supply of Antivenom.
The Boy Scouts say "Be Prepared," and that bit of time and money spent on your part just might someday save your life.
Best Regards John Z

John, you forgot one more option. He could purchase AV from alphadogg. Sure, he is keeping snakes illegally and making his own special AV, but what the hey? ; )
Sorry, I just couldn't resist.
