It seriously breaks my heart when I go threw a group of videos on youtube, some verry good, an educational like this one -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1ngWC9eSic
an i scroll down to check the comments, an even though i know what to expect it just ticks me off to see peopel making comments like
"That would be a dead rattlesnake if I could get to a shotgun."
and of course,
"but I see rattlesnakes all the time and never do I let them live. Even if I did catch him and put him back in the trees what would u do if he came back in your yard. Or if u had a dumbass dog that got bit. Sorry but I would get him with my 12 gauge. And if u r wondering I do live in the country"
an lets not forget the usual "worthless snake" bit that comes out of so many peoples mouths. there are more worthless peoplein this world then worthless snakes. People wonder why i tend to value a animals life over that of a humans, an will risk alot to help save a an animal, even if it means rushing out into traffic... We invaded their territory. not the other way around. The ignorance thats spread by so many people just infurriates me beyond all recognition.
if people would take the time to properly educate themselves about the world that they live in, then things could be so much beter for both us, an the animals around us.
then of course theres the people that fall into the catagory of "i don't care" these people could careless if the snake does serve an important purpose, or what good that they do. instead they kill every snake in sight, an when you try an educate them, you get the "I don't care" answer.
There are so many options on how to deal with snakes, without hurting them, how to live with them peacefuly. An people just wont take the time to listen, to read, anything!
GAH -__- its like for every 1 person who loves a snake, 10 spring up that hate them.

Celeste, it is not so much the folks who hate snakes that comment on UTube and MySpace that bother me so much, as they are expected. The world is full of hicks and uninformed people who hate snakes. And the unfortunate thing, is that they are allowed to own computers and express their ideas and predjuses.
What really bothers me is just how many folks find the need to use the filthy language in their comments on those sites after they watch a video.
Lots of little kids have access to the internet, and many of them watch UTube and MySpace Videos, and are exposed to all of that filthy language if they read the comments.
I really wonder just what kind of effect it will have for those kids. Will they think that use of that type of language is proper, because they found older kids and adults using it ?
It just makes me kind of sad ..............
Best Regards John Z

As a professional educator, a Science teacher to be exact, I have a philosophy that ignorance, like Scurvy, is an easily-cured disease. It just needs the right remedy-education/knowledge. Since none of us can ever know everything there is to know, we are all ignorant of some things, but I also believe it should be an inate quality of our species to try to find out as much as we can before we die. There is, however, an insidious, cancerous, incurable disease called STUPIDITY, a terminal condition. In the case of a stupid person, no knowledge can get in, and nothing worthwhile will ever come out of such a mind. The people whose quotes you included are NOT ignorant, but prime examples of genuine stupidity. They are incapable of learning, no matter how much knowledge is presented to them, or in what manner.
I'll give you a great example of the difference between "ignorance" and "stupidity". A few years ago, a family of five rented a little house in the woods next door to me. The parents could not read or write, and the kids were struggling in school, a school where I taught. They looked like proverbial "trailer trash"-missing or rotting teeth, ragged and dirty clothes, cars on blocks in the yard. I pretty much let them keep to themselves; they didn't bother me or complain about my dogs, so I didn't bother them. One day, while out feeding my dogs, I heard a huge commotion in the yard, lots of screaming and yelling, followed by the oldest son, who was in the fifth grade, charging across the hedge row that separated their yard from mine, red-faced and breathless, to ask me if I had any shells for a 12-gauge. Naturally, I asked him WHY he wanted this, and he explained that there was a great-big-huge black snake in a tree in their yard and their Daddy "needed to shoot it". In less time than it takes gasoline prices to go up, I was over in that yard, resisting the urge to show my own redneck side and get in somebody's face about the lack of wisdom of shooting a snake while *I* was still around, but upon seeing the four-foot Black Rat Snake in the tree, about six feet off the ground, I just reached up and pulled him down, to the shock and amazement of my neighbors. I used that as an opportunity to introduce myself-and do a bit of educating, explaining to them how most snakes were harmless, and even beneficial because they ate rodents, and these folks could really relate to the value of ANYTHING that ate rats or mice! They honestly did not know that there was such a thing as a harmless snake, or that snakes weren't out to get them, and were stunned at the gentle nature of the animal they'd wanted to kill, seeing that it wasn't trying to harm ME. The kids eventually overcame their fear and shock enough to want to touch the snake, and I let them. They couldn't believe it didn't feel slimy or gross, but actually felt pleasant. While the parents didn't quite get up that much nerve, they were still obviously eager to learn more, asking questions about the wives' tales they'd always heard and believed to be true, not once arguing with me and doubting me. I must have spent three hours in that yard, telling them about snakes, helping to fill that void in knowledge. The father told me that after learning what he had just learned, and seeing his kids pet a live snake without it trying to hurt them, even though it was a totally wild animal, he actually felt ashamed of all the snakes he'd killed over his lifetime, knowing that for each dead snake, he'd saved the lives of countless rats that would eat HIS food, chew holes in the walls of his home, even gnawing wires and causing the family's previous home to catch fire and burn down, leaving them with nothing but the clothes on their backs. He'd only been "taught" that snakes were mean, evil and wanted to harm us, and now, as he put it, it was like someone had lifted a sack from over his eyes. As poor as these folks were, financially, they were starved for learning, and just needed someone to teach them. Weeks later, the I went over to show them a new Corn Snake I'd caught, to relish the "ooohs" and "aaahhs" at the snake's pretty colors, and the dad drove up from a fishing trip down on the Lynches River. As he got out of the truck(greeted by his excited kids telling him to come look at the "real purdy snake"), he told me,"You gonna be real prouda me at what I done today! When me an' my buddy was one the way to the river, we come 'cross this big ole' rattler coiled up on the path. My buddy wanted to kill 'im with the shevel we brung to dig up worms with, but I tole' him that if he didn't mess with that snake, it won't gonna mess with him. He still wouldn't walk 'round it, though, so I had to take the shevel and scoop that snake up on it like a pile of cow manure, and throw it over in the bushes!"
THAT, folks, sums up the difference between "ignorance" and genuine stupidity.

Thats anice story Sharon ;). I;ve come across alota people who are tehs ame way. When ever we go down on teh river camping i am always fishing, thus i catch alota turtles, an of course my water adventures usualy bring me upon varrious species of snake. I foudnw hile down tehr iver that if there are kids around that its ultimately teh best time to try an teach, an i give the kids a chance to touch the critetrs i catch. Often its thrue the kids that makes it easier to teach the parents.
John Z, i dun realy think its so much the effects that the language has on the kids, i mean i grew up watching horror movies an had parents that where cool enough to prety much let me listen to anything i wanted so long as i didn't show out etc. I think fully that its the fact that the adults don;t take the time to explain it to the kids. etc. they don;t tell them why it's not right not talk like that, instead most parents ground, or pop their kids in the mouth, wash it out with soap etc.
I have a video posted right now on my youtube channel that i made in responce to a video that i watched. the video that i saw appalled me that so many people supported it...
What i saw was a guy had fed his burmeese python a rat.. ok not to bad right? well the snake is still in the process of swallowing the rat, the guy put a still living chick in the snakes mouth, so that the snake would swallow it whole. the snake of course does what snakes do.. an inevitably swallows this small chick alive an you can hear an se ethe chick movinga round inside the snake...
the video i made was to gather support to hopefuly help get that not only removed but to educate a bit, an you know it doesn't surprise me the amount of ignorant comments that i recive from people. suck as " look at you fat *** you like hamburger don't you?" or other comments along those lines which support of course the feeding of the chick.
It's not feeding the chick that i have a problem with, or feeding live for that matter. but rather the way that that particular feeding was done. People happilyc ondemened the guy that fed a kitten to his rattle snake, but they wouldn't stand against this guy.
