5-foot venomous cobra seized in Crown Point
Associated Press
5:41 AM CDT, September 29, 2008 CROWN POINT, Ind.
Indiana conservation officers say they seized a 5-foot venomous cobra from a Crown Point woman who didn't have the required state permit to possess the dangerous snake.
When officers seized the Egyptian cobra Sunday from Elizabeth Zelms, she told them she had rescued the snake from someone who couldn't care for it.
She was issued a summons for possessing a venomous reptile without a permit.
State Conservation Officer Shawn D. Brown says cobras are a particularly lethal species and they're not something to "mess around with."
He says Zelms tipped off authorities when she applied with the state for a permit for the cobra. Brown says state law says people must have a permit before they get certain exotic animals.

Seems to me like this woman has been punished for trying to do the right thing, given that she is qualified and experienced enough to safely keep and maintain the snake. It is very understandable to me how one can suddenly and unexpectedly come into possession of a certain snake that someone wants to get rid of... sometimes, you just have to act.
