Ever notice that when someone on this site asks a particularly naive question that a certain sect of site members will “dog-pile” on and let the poor schmo know, in no uncertain terms, what a complete idiot he or she is? While the idiot part may be true, I’m sure that there is a large percentage of you got into this particular hobby in less than “ideal” circumstances. We’ve ALL made mistakes when we first stared keeping reptiles (at least, I have) an responding to what seems to be an idiotic question like a condescending ass is perhaps not the best way to handle the situation.

I totally agree Todd, i think thats why a large number of members no longer post here and simply watch as it happens. It has been a trend that has come about in recent years as if you look at the first posts on the site most were very similar questions, but with alot different responses.

That's exactly why i don't even bother anymore . Too many jump the gun on the beginner , and i have tried recommending these threads to people but they usually deffer due to past experiences . I'd post more here , but i want my brain to grow , not ache . Really guys , we all should ease up a bit .

Agreed.
That seems to be what people dont understand about filling in their profile, and is a great reason to require folks to do so.
This brings to mind the young kid (or so it seems) who asked something along the lines of "what is easier to keep, gaboon or rhino" some time back.
We all kinda jumped on that kid (admittedly myself included), not intentionally, but alot of younger less experienced keepers here, I'm sure end up a bit intimidated by the responses and advice given sometimes. No ones fault really, it just takes a little bit of understanding. I KNOW FOR A FACT I probably asked some REALLY "dumb" questions when I started some years ago, we all have. Its the only way to get some "personal answers" and we should provide that, without negative opinions.
Unless it is an obvious safety hazard to themselves or the animal, all the advice they need is what benefits them, not the "criticism".
There have been quite a few people lately with some absolutely dumb and ridiculous questions, but maybe we let those past posts get to us when a newbie or young kid comes here with a question that is poorly stated or a bit off.
Thats what people dont seem to understand about filling in their profile, it helps ALOT in going about providing answers to these questions.
Just an opinion.
Take Care.
~John.

Agreed. I was always taught that no question is a dumb question....everybody was once a rookie at something in their lives. It's why I don't ask questions anymore on this forum, especially being a Hawaii born resident with zero experience with any type of snake.
I have lots of questions too, mostly curious kinds, but I see responses that hammer posters all the time, so I just read what others ask and learn that way. What's ironic and hilarious is that the ones doing the hammering could use some "hammering" on their spelling. LOL. Nobody's perfect.
What's also funny is that the "young kids" that post over-the-top questions and such that really seem to irritate all the expert professionals actually end up to be the really interesting forum topics!
You can check out venom-center.com too. Great forum there and some decent pics too. Not as as much "meat" as this site but it's another option if you want it.

I also agree I find that since some questions are just asked so often that you don't see it from the other persons perspective and you forget that they don't know the answer to this question and they also probably don't know how often it's asked. Just gotta put yourself in others shoes I guess.

You guys all bring up some very good and interesting points.
I am not sure that I agree with Todd when he states: "Ever notice that when someone on this site asks a particularly naive question that a certain sect of site members will “dog-pile” on and let the poor schmo know, in no uncertain terms, what a complete idiot he or she is."
Perhaps there is some of that, but I really do not see it as being all that common anymore. Several years ago, that type of thing was much worse at this site, but most of the hot-heads are not here anymore. I would really like for you to point out resent examples in posts where folks dog-piled on a poor schmo as you put it, and told them they were an idiot ? Can you tell us just what thread you are talking about ?
This site does a good job of answering all types of questions, that is why it is one of the oldest reptile forums on the internet. You will have a very tough time finding other venomous snake forums that have been around for more than 10 years.
It is true that some folks here get frustrated by hearing the same questions over and over. But folks still get answers to those questions.
I think what is more frustrating, is when folks come here and want to treat it like Google or Wikipedia. They are often too LAZY to fill in their profiles, and are too LAZY to search the old Experts posts first, to see if the question has allready been asked, and they are too unobservant to see that we have a FAQ section over on the side that answers the questions like "I want to milk snakes to make money" that have been asked 1000 times. And they have not even bothered trying Google or Wikipedia, both of which are great sources of information.
You have to remember that folks who take the time to answer questions here are not getting paid to do so, they are doing it because they love the reptile hobby, and because they truely want to help educate folks about reptiles. They can get resentfull and frustrated when they are treated like a search engine. After all, they are living folks with emotions. Can you really expect them to not get a little frustrated when they are asked obvious or lazy questions again and again and again ? Questions that the persons asking should have been able to find the answer to themselves with a few key strokes on Google ? It is easy to start thinking why bother answering folks questions. You folks who have been here less than a year, try answering tens of thousands of questions for 5 or 7 years here, then see if you feel the same way after that. It is very difficult to answer the same questions hundreds and hundreds of times and not have it create a wee bit of emotion.
You know, it is rare that folks who ask questions and get an answer here, even bother to say Thank You. Sure, some do, and I for one greatly appreciate it when folks do that. However, most folks don't even bother. There is a rudeness and a desire for instant answers that is becoming more and more common these days.
Any reasonable person wanting to know something about reptiles should use the search engines first. Then, after those did not produce the answers they were seeking, should come here.
Many years ago, if you had a question about a reptile of amphibian, you would write a letter to the Curator of Reptiles at a Zoo, and you would put a stamp on that letter and mail it, and if you were really lucky, you might get a reply a few weeks later from that Curator. There was no internet then. Folks have no appreciation as to just what kind of a great resource this site is. Instead, the want to gripe becaue it does not fulfill some fantasy definition they have created as to what a venomous reptile site should be like.
And, Craig, I find it a bit ironic that you say that you do not ask your curious questions anymore. In the past you have asked very good questions. Some of the things about the Leptotyphlops and the worm snake from Hawaii were very interesting. I would challenge you to ask those questions. I look forward to hearing them.
I would be really surprized if anyone treats your questions as being dumb questions. But we will never know unless you ask them. A question that goes unasked is far worse than a dumb question.
Just for the record, there are DUMB questions. And the person who thought up that old saying "that there are no dumb questions" was dumb.
The world is full of good questions, brilliant questions, average questions, and even dumb questions. I would bet that everyone here has asked a dumb or embarissing question somewhere in their lives. I know I sure have.
If someone asks a dumb question, we do not need to jump all over the person for asking it. We need to sigh, and answer it, as we have done a thousand times. It should not be an excuse to attack the person in any way. But, we should also ask if there is anything that we can do to change the situation, and perhaps make the general public more knowledgable about reptiles.
Also, Craig, I hate to single you out, but you stated "What's also funny is that the "young kids" that post over-the-top questions and such that really seem to irritate all the expert professionals." Can you give us an example of that ? Where did a young kid resently ask a over the top question that irritated the professionals ? And just what professionals were the irritated ones ? What thread was it in ?
Also, you make a comment "What's ironic and hilarious is that the ones doing the hammering could use some "hammering" on their spelling."
Spelling has nothing to do with a persons ability to answer questions if the person has experience in keeping the animals in question. Some folks are better spellers than others. Some are better at grammar. So what ? Some folks have poor spelling skills due to Dyslexia. Some folks have poor spelling skills due to poor teachers in the schools they attended. Some folks have poor spelling for other reasons, like autism, or Tourette's. Other folks are just bad at typing. Why do you find that "hilarious"? Do you make it a habit of laughing at folks with disabilities?
Best Regards John Z
