With Wyeth coral AV running out soon, and Bioclon Coralmyn being in short supply for maybe up to a year, what is the plan? Also, when shortage of Coralmyn is no longer an issue, currently, in the absence of any company trying to get expensive FDA tests/approval for Bioclon in the USA, how will docs/anti venom banks get around the requirement that if the AV is imported for exotic snakes, it can only be used for exotic aka non native snake bites? My assumption is the Bioclon would be imported as exotic AV but used for native snake bites, what is the approach to get around this? Should we expect an increase in reported supposed exotic coral bites in FL and TX to save lives rather then put up with FDA bureocracy?

Z, there are some rules in place that allow the use of the Bioclon. Others here in the medical fields will be able to tell you exactly how it works, I know that there is a way they are allowed to use Bioclon if there are no other antivenoms available.

Also, as far as the FDA approval thing, there have been trials of Bioclon antivenom going on in the US for several years now. That might help the approval process. Zoos carry imported antivenoms all the time, so it should not be that much of an issue, and might not even require FDA approval, as the same antivenom can be used to treat exotic Coral Snake bites also.
As far as what folks should do, perhaps they should not keep or collect Coral Snakes for a couple of years.
However, it folks are carefull, there is really no reason to get bitten by a Coral Snake. I have collected and kept hundreds of them over the last 35 years. You have to try really hard to get bitten by one.
Best Regards John Z
