Has anyone heard of this happening? I read it in quite a few places, but I can't imagine a snake eating a turtle. Wouldn't there be a negative effect on the snake?

Jon, cottonmouths will eat almost anything, including baby turtles, baby alligators, and baby cottonmouths !
I have seen them on several occasions on S. GA roads eating road killed frogs and snakes.
I sometimes feed mine Chicken Gizzards.
They are like the garbige disposals of snakes, LOL !
Best Regards John Z

I once saw a western cottonmouth on a back country La. HWY attempting to eat a full grown possom road kill. I had to disturb his meal in order to prevent him from getting run over or killed by some other means. I seriously doubt his ability to swallow the possom anyway as it was twice his size!

I know of one verified report of a large one eating a roadkill cat. There is a subpopulation in Florida that subsists on dead birds and FECES in a rookery.
Yeah. They'll eat durn near anything.

haha gotta love these guys huh? They are incredibly opertunistic thats for sure an I highly doubt they would ever turn down a free meal in the right conditions. With their habbit of eatig road kill it makes me kinda wonder about teh bacteria that these specific snakes could carry in their mouths.

Have found them eating frogs live & dead, salemanders, fish live & dead, snakes including kingsnakes, water snakes, queen snakes, other cottonouths, copperheads, turtels, lizards and quit a few other unsavery things.
It is facinating that this seems to be the only snake in the world that will eat anything. A few years ago I found a dried-up mud hole, that had a pile of fresh dead fish in it. To make a long story short, there were 2 cottonmouth eating their fill of this pile.
This is exactly the reason I love this species so much. They never fail to supries me “LOL”.
