This subject is being visited on this site already and I stated that I would only use top opening cages for my pitvipers. On the other hand some of my slender hognose vipers are psyco and shoot right out the top fast very fast mamba fast.So I think I will get a flip open front cage from dragons just to try.Iwould like to see If this will keep them from shooting up like a twacked out psycotic death stick on meth.

Do you think they are less likely to react to intrusion from the side? I'm a Porthidium fan, too, and agree that their speed can be startling. They are probably as close to Bothrops as I'll go. When I am feeding my hognose vipers I use 12" hemostats to stay farther away from them than it looks like I need to. Since they are usually coiled they look deceptively small and can strike farther than I expect, both horizontally and vertically.
I say they stay coiled, but that is really my lansbergi. I had ophryomegas (sp?) for a few years and don't recall them staying coiled. Do you experience that, or is that just my observation from a limited number of them?

My rosei are easy to deal with so far alot more layed back than my slenders .I was going to try something different but it probly wont change a thing .I use some 18 inch tongs In dealing with feeding .Lately tho the larger my slenders get the more hopped up they are. But I never let my gard down with the landsbergs tho.Just in case. ARCHIE
