I am making a cage right now and I'm wondering about screen size? Does anyone have any objections to 1/4 inch screen? The cage is going to be 3'x2'.

Jon,
That would defenietly depend on the species being housed in that particular cage. I might suggest 1/8inch holed screen mesh, as you will have more options should you ever decide to use that cage for somthing else down the line.
Will this cage be housing a venomous snake? If so, be VERY careful about how big the holes are, and where the screen has to be installed. (AWAY from the door, or where your hand/fingers will not contact it).
If the screened area is large enough, a venomous snake will have no trouble biting right through it should your hand be near it.
Take Care.

I suggest you go with smaller holes. In the future if you have any animal housed there that likes/eats live food (rodenst, crickets), you don’t want the food animal to escape and keep you awake at night, crickets are horrible at preventing humans from getting any sleep.
Back in CA years ago, once the crickets shipped to me escaped from bad packaging at the post office, I am sure they hate me there even now years later, and I was just recipient, not sender

The screens on my cages are doubled, with a 3/4 inch gap between them.(the thickness of the plywood.)I have 1/4 inch on the inside and window screen on the outside. The gap could save you from a bite, especially if you'll be houseing pit vipers and accidentally place a hand or arm on the screen. Marty

Great point Marty.
I usually use plexi or clear lexan acrylic pieces with drilled holes for vents, but any time I use screening, it is doubled with a gap between the pieces. DOUBLED screening, stretched tight, is defenitly a must if housing any true or pitviper, if you are likely to come into contact with that area of the cage.
Take Care.

One thing that you can also do, is put fiberglass window screen on the inside of a cage, Under the 1/8 or 1/2 inch metal mesh screen.
That way, if the snake rubs his nose, he will be rubbing against the fiberglass screen, which is less abrasive, and not be rubbing against the metal screen, which will abrade a nose in no time at all.
Best Regards John Z

I've made up my mind. I'm going to put 1/16" aluminum window screen on the inside doubled with a 1/4 in steel screen. This way it will be strong and shouldn't hurt the snake.

iS THIS THE LID OR THE WALLS . To control the enviorment in an open cage can be a little bit of trouble.Tho I have never kept a snake in a open cage.Years ago A friend kept atrox in outside rabbit hutch style cages .As I walked by one day a snake struck the side and released a eye full of venom and man it burned like hell. so for hots never. If they strike the side with any force they release venom like A spitting cobra .ARCHIE

Actually , its just screen/mesh covering 2, 3,or 4 inch vent holes on mine. John, I use to put the fine screen on the inside, but I had mice tear through it a couple of times. They weren't in there very long either.I thought they had been eaten, and there they were, between the 2 screens. Now I feed mostly F/T though.
