I have just larned that cottonmouths were the only snakes in the U.S. that basks at temps. as low as 33-50 degrees. If the sun is out, And the wind is calm. Has anyone ever seen this behavior.? This info came from the (Savannah River Ecology Laboratory.) Thanks all.

I have not personally seen this behavior, but I have seen them on days that it was in the low 50's in Southeastern Virginia.
I have a friend that swears that he has seen Cottonmouths on skim ice in Mississippi during the duck hunting season there. He has no reason to lie to me about this.... so I'd say the Cottonmouth was basking at temperatures that were lower than 32 degrees F.... That's one tough snake....

I have been a resident along the upper Texas Gulf Coast for 30 + years. I have seen cottonmouths out and about during duck hunting season, however, the winters here are quite mild. I have never seen them during severe cold "snaps". I don't think the temps. here in Texas don't get cold enough to make these snakes go into hibernation. So, I too, think that cottonmouths are taking advantage of warm winter days. These are just personal observations.
