I think a copperhead would be your best first venomous snake. Thay are cool looking, And there is no known deaths from them. Good luck,

Before you rush out and either catch, not recommended, or buy, highly recommended, a venomous snake, check state and local laws to find if you have to have a permit. Read all you can find about it and locate someone near you that can mentor you in the required husbandry of that species. Then, find out if your local hospital has the antivenin, because most beginners manage to get bit. If, by now, you are not discouraged, set up your pen and be absolutely cerntain it cannot escape. Get your snake, nothing more than a copperhead. Be sure the snake is feeding. Have your source show you the snake feeds before you buy it. Good luck and welcome to herping.
