Hello Ashley,
The Bushmaster is in the family Viperidae along with rattlesnakes, copperheads, cottonmouths, and other new and old world vipers. It is also in the subfamily Crotalinae, along with rattlesnakes. It is the largest viper in the world and is the only pitviper that lays eggs (oviparous). Most books and journals today seperate the bushmaster species into four species and subspecies. They are the South American bushmaster (Lachesis muta muta), the Black headed bushmaster (Lachesis melanocephala), the Central American bushmaster (Lachesis stenophrys), and the Atlantic Coastal bushmaster (Lachesis muta rhombeata). However, many books still say that they are all in the muta species with melanocephala, etc... as subspecies.
The snakes in the family Elapidae are cobras, mambas, sea snakes, and coral snakes. One of the many difference between them in telling them apart are their fangs. All the vipers will have long, hollow, independently moving and retractible fangs called solenoglyphous fangs while the elapids will have much shorter and fixed fangs up front called proteroglyphous fangs.

Ty,
I believe you have your "New World" ,and "Old World" Pitvipers mixed up. Calloselasma rhodostoma is a "Old World" Pitviper.
Cheers,
Derek K.

Check out bushmasteronline.com it's Dean Ripa's site. I have to put in a good word for his book, it's amazing! There is a lot of info, on every aspect of these awesome snakes. One of my all time favorite books.
