New owners for confiscated Lehighton pet store snakes
3:06 PM EST, December 23, 2008
The 160 snakes confiscated from a downtown Lehighton exotic pet store whose owner left them ill and dying -- and unsecured -- in the closed building for months will have new owners, a judge said today.
But where the snakes -- taken in the largest known reptile seizure in the state -- will live is still a slippery subject. Carbon County President Judge Roger N. Nanovic asked Assistant District Attorney Cynthia Dydra-Hatton to list the 27 venomous snakes rescued July 22 from Serpent's Den at 114 S. First St. so he can order the county to take custody of them.
Lawyers at the hearing said building owner Michael Sulek has taken custody of the 137 non-venomous snakes that authorities say store owner Steven Markevich, 44, of Jim Thorpe left behind when he and his girlfriend disappeared. Sulek is selling them.
Authorities have charged Markevich with reckless endangerment, maintaining a public nuisance, 17 counts of animal cruelty and 160 counts of violating the borough's exotic pet ordinance, and are searching for him.
The county is unsure what to do with the venomous snakes, now being cared for by animal rescuer Chris Foley, Dydra-Hatton said. She said the county may seek to sell them or give them to the SPCA.
But Jack Ardey, an animal cruelty officer with the state SPCA, said even that group doesn't have the ability to house and care for such a large collection, and wouldn't keep them.

Interesting story.
This would be much more useful to me if I had ever heard of Lehighton or knew what part of the country it was in.

This is up near me... I know Chris Foley and the DA told him to sell off the snakes which he's been doing. It would be nice if the Judge & DA could be on the same page.

Typical Gov't process, the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing...
