I think we can all share some funny albeit humbling stories from the field (and our equipment). I remember when I was herping Shawnee (So. Illinois) and decided to scale up a steep face wall as I spotted a timber sunning in early spring. Of course, like clockwork, I slipped when I was about 25 feet off the ground (not death defying but when all you see is jagged rocks below, it got my adrenaline slightly elevated). Thank God I had my Midwest field hook as I was able to quickly jam the hook end into a crevice like a rock climber using his equipment and was able to nearly put my entire body weight on it until I could get better traction under my feet. Never got close enough to the timber for a good shot but that hook may have saved my life. An 'ol friend got a good laugh out of that episode.

Well, I make my living in paintball...and I think the same thing applies here as when parents ask about cheap, low end goggles.
"When they fail and someone is in the hospital that twenty bucks you saved won't seem like very much money."
Even if they are half price, is an injured snake, or an injured human, really worth fifty bucks?
Just my opinion...but safety equipment is usually the last place you want to go imported to save a buck.
