Archie, because you live in Texas, you are very far from a Delta shipping point. Most folks are not that fortunate (and I really mean that as a good thing, as being that far away from a big city has to be nice).
Most folks in this country are an hour or two drive from a shipping point, which is not all that bad, if they want to ship reptiles. Of course, some folks will complain about a 2 hour drive, even it it lets them recieve many nice reptiles.
Only a few years ago, I waited for word from a reptile dealer who was going to ship some pygmy rattle snakes to me. They were supposed to come to the Atlanta Airport, and I waited for the call that morning, and had a day off, so I could drive to get the critters when they arrived. It would have been a hour and a half drive or so, but would have been worth it, as I really wanted to add those pygmy rattlesnakes to my breeding program.
Well, about 10 am, the UPS guy drives up and deliveres this large box to my house. It had no markings, and I had not ordered anything. So, I open it, and much to my surprise, it has the pygmy rattlesnakes inside of the box.
You might think that I was pleased by this, but I was not. The snakes were unlabled, and if the box had been opened by someone else besides myself, someone could have been bitten by the snakes. Also, the reptile dealer had pinched off the rattle on all of those pygmy rattlesnakes, so that they would not make any noise in transit.
I would have much prefered to have driven an hour to the airport and picked up the box, and to have not have recieved rattlesnakes without rattles. That dealer broke the law, and endangered me, and anyone else who might have opened that unlabled box. This is not a good thing at all. The dealer said that he had lost his Delta Dash shipping permit. Well, he surely could have found someone who was Delta Certified to help with the shipment. Most states have many of those folks on the list.
Just a few updates on this topic.
Best Regards
John Z

I think Celeste was trying to say someone should start a delivery service that delivers to your house. In the many years i have been in this, i don't recall ever a time one could "legally" ship venomous door to door, though it happens all the time. I recall a friend telling me once, he got a call from someone wanting to sell him an adult gaboon. He agreed to buy it and the snake arrived in the regular US mail in a couple days. He had no idea what was in the box, but luckily recognized the name from the label and opened with care. that could have been a disaster at many levels. big snake like that probably had fangs over and inch and could have went right through that 1/4 inch cardboard.
i don't think its lazy to want a more convenient means of shipping. anyone breeding low end snakes, much like what i do, would have no chance of ever selling any offspring from TX. how on earth could one sell a cottonmouth for $50 and have to drive 7 hours round trip to ship? there is just no way!!! i am 110 miles from the Atlanta hub. Since you can not ship venomous from Chattanooga, i have to use atl to send or receiver. its terribly inconvenient. and rarely will anyone be willing to pay the cost of shipping when i have to factor in a round trip to atl.
however, i certainly do see why the shipping companies are not interested in doing the business. we are an esoteric lot. how much profit could they possibly expect to make? just one accident at any point and time would cost them 10 times over what they could ever expect to make from shipping them. there is no profit incentive in venomous snakes at any level. keeping, breeding, or shipping. if you are doing it, its because of a passion for the animals and not a passion for cash.....and my friends, ALL of your shippers, only have a passion for cash. I think the only reason we can still ship delta dash is we are so small in numbers, we stay below the radar screen. at some point, there is going to be a high profile case...and its over. the only way they will be shipped legally is if you put them in your car and take them.

I think it is too easy for some to get venomous.
Can you imagine if it was a 50 dollar charge to ship to your door a "50" dangerous snake. man......
there is already a lot of people that get herps that way that should not. can you imagine hots too.
I was just talking to a person the other day on how easy it is to get a hot. Too easy really

i had a couple people, off the air, ask me to explain what i mean by venomous shippers flying under the radar and why i think delta will stop shipping.
Every major company has what they call risk analysts. these people look into company business and weights how much they make verses what they risk. i think, thus far, the number of us that are shipping venomous is so low, we have not made it into cross hairs of those risk analysts. when somethings happens that calls attention to us and some risk analysts weights out what they risk to lose from one accident verses what they make shipping the snakes, Delta will pull venomous shipping so fast it will make your head spin. a friend of mine took an EDB bite last year. he was in south FL where the medicale care for bites is the best and a/v is plentiful. the treatment still ended up costing him $650,000 (at last count) Put that same bite to some delta employee in MI, it could easily be in the millions. how much do you think they make annually shipping venomous snakes? one accident, only one, would cost them way more then they could expect to make in years of doing this business.
