Council nixes snake breeding measure
By Erica Guidetti
An effort to make snake breeding easier in New Castle County was nixed by Council.
Existing law says residents can breed non-venomous snakes under six feet long if their property is at least an acre.
Councilman George Smiley proposed the acre requirement be lifted by Council disagreed with a 6 to 5 vote to keep things the way they are.
Several members of council expressed their concern for neighbors if snakes could be breed in close proximity to other homes.
Nate Peterson who supported the ordinance disagreed.
He feels giving pet stores permits is more dangerous than allowing breeding in homes because snakes could get in ventilation and go to other stores instead of just getting outside if they are at homes.
With the ordinance not passing Peterson will be unable to breed snakes because he does own an acre of land.
