I am from the Chicago area and will be in Ocala, Florida for several weeks in February and March. I am trying to find a reputable person in that area to do some tutoring or mentoring about herps for 1-4 hours a week for a very bright 8 year old who already has a good collection himself.
I have been in touch with Silver Springs Park and have a one hour session set up with Tim Frisch, the Reptile Manager but I would like to arrange something a bit more extensive. I contacted Rob Carmichael at Wildlife Discovery Center in Lake Forest, Illinois, and he suggested posting the request here.
If any of you know someone who has a personal herp collection and would be interested or knows of any classes that are available during this time frame I would appreciate the information.
The dates we will be there are 2/7-2/22 and 2/27-3/15. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
Thanks a lot!!!!

Mary,
I know Tim personally and he would be great for what you are wanting to do. Plus getting into the Springs your son can view some interesting animals, such as their dwarf crocodiles and the Phillipene Crocodile(one of my favs). Make sure you bring a camera, the glass walls of the croc and alligator enclosures allow you to get very close pics that normally you would never get.
I wish I could help you, but my collection is mainly venomous and being a private collector/breeder, I do not have visitors in the hot room.
If you need a spot for him to look around to see some herps in the wild, I can gladly help you there. Please send me some email at Adamanteus70@aol.com

Wow, you are certainly my idea of the "dream mom." What a lucky kid! Best of luck! Incidentally, most zoos have children's programs and many will take extra time with a youngster who is especially interested. Depending on where in Florida you are headed, try checking with all the zoos you can, such as the Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Garden, the St. Augustine Alligator Farm, etc.
