This article hits home. I live in Southern NV and last spring one of my wolf dogs was bitten by rattler, fortunately it was speckled and not Mohave, so she survived without Antivenin and just got supportive therapy.
Her head/neck were swollen for a while and it took a while for the swelling to go down and for me to put her collar back on.
I talked to somebody who knows much more about hots than i do, and he said the canine really had to make the snake angry for snake to strike more than once, as 1st bite is often dry.
So I was wondering, how likely is it for one snake to get 3 dogs in such a short period of time and inject venom to all of them??? Small dogs, so I guess not much venom needed to make them sick, but still...

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Three dogs are recovering at a local animal clinic after a poisonous snake bit them Sunday night.
A foot-long Pygmy Rattlesnake bit Ivette Capella's Poodle, Cyndi and her two Dachshunds, Michelle and Gabriella in her backyard.
Capella came across the snake after her dogs were barking at it. She immediately called 911 and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue's Venom Response Team were dispatched. "I was able to contain it safely and went to check on the dog which had suffered a bite to the muzzle which is not an uncommon spot for dogs to get bit," said Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Lieutenant Scott Mullin.
Capella rushed Cyndi to Knowles Animal Clinic, located at 9933 Sunset Drive. "My Poodle which is pure white had a little red mark between her eyes," she said.
Capella left Cyndi in doctors care and returned home. "When my youngest daughter looked at the other dogs she started crying, and we noticed that their snouts were very swollen," said Capella.
Capella then rushed Michelle and Gabriella to the same animal clinic. Doctors treated all three dogs with an anti-venom. All of them are expected to be OK.
Officials said the snake with be OK as well. The venom will be used to make anti-venom to save future lives.
This entire ordeal has cost Capella more than $4,000.

From what I've read online pygmies have the smallest venom yield of any other pitviper and A/V isn't very effective anyways...
It makes me wonder if the vet wasn't taking advantage of a hysterical owner...

"Poisonous snake attacks 3 dogs in South Florida"
Wow.. Like that attention grabbing headline!! Sounds like a mugging. I am pretty sure the story reads differently in the "Rattlesnake Newspaper"
"Three large mammals attack small Pygmy rattler"

I do not think that Pygmy Rattlesnake venom is being used to make antivenom in this country.

We don't use them for antivenin research. However we do use the venom for other research. Fun little spring-loaded snakes though.

The din of a poodle and two dachsunds yapping is enough to drive even a creature without external ears to commit caninicide. Hats off to the pigmy for performing a valuable community service. Incidentally, I have seen quite a few dogs come in to my brother's vet clinic with swollen faces from copperhead bites and all of them recovered after being given antibiotics and a few days rest.
