I am new to herping. And unfortunatly i know no places to go to find any snakes. Most of the ones i find seem to have met Mr. Goodyear. I would like to find a few live snakes. any suggestions on where to go? I dont plan on handeling the venomous ones yet. I just want a few pictures and to catch a few other snakes. If any one has any information. I would be very grateful. I am willing to drive to any place within a 3 county radius.
thanks for your help.

I recommend finding the nearest Conservation Area or National Forest Land that has a large acreage of habitat for you to hike. These places are excellent to find snakes without the interuption of cars and such. If you don't want to get lost, just stay near to the trails. Find hillsides that are heavily covered by rocks or logs, and look under every thing a snake could hide under. Walk along river edges, lakes, ponds, and look in the trees over hanging these areas for water snakes. They like to hang out near the water. Finding snakes isn't always easy, but you have an advantage in that you live in an excellent state to find them. Don't give up, and keep at it, and you'll be rewarded. Good Luck ---Anthony MO

Nipps, Hi. If you do not find anyone to help you with handling hot's. just start with non-venomous snakes. like rat snakes, or a coachwhip. handle them like thay were hot. And see if you can go with out a bite. do this for a year or so. than get a venomous snake. nothing that is sure to kill you. maybe a timber rattler, or something like that. Good luck my friend. Stay safe. Spanky

I recommend buying a Florida Atlas & Gazetteer at your local WalMart store. This is a collection of detailed map grids that show all wooldland, swampland, unpaved roads, trails etc. A great field guide that I highly recommend is Alan Tennant's SNAKES OF FLORIDA which gives a lot of info on habitats that should help you find your target species. I live about 40 miles south of you in Sarasota County and snakes are plentiful here. Florida is a very "snakey" state, but unfortunately Pinellas County is so thoroughly built-up that I'm afraid you won't find much more than the most common of snakes. Basically, just search any other Florida county,in the right conditions, and you should have results. Let me know if I can help you further & lots of luck! - Wollers
