Ok all, Here it is. I am telling my story. (new handlers please read.) I have spent the last three years with venomous snakes, 10 foot tall and bullet proof. not any more. (I am now one foot tall.) and I plan to keep venomous for the rest of my life. and I will live a long time. I got my first hot three years ago. it was a cottonmouth. (not a good first snake) any way, The first thing that went wroung was, I pined the snake and reached in to pick it up and found out it was not pined. left hand index finger. bad bite. lost part of my finger. next, same cottonmouth. few months later. tailing it came around and tagged same finger. lost more finger. (darn) oh-well I'm alive. next, lg. canebrake rattler, tailing (AFTER I TOOK MY MEDS) "Legal ones" anyway showing friends how to do it. or how not to. tagged in the left wrist. bad bite. allmost died. SHOCK. next, 3foot canebrake. tailing no meds, just looked up to talk. right hand. bad bite. SHOCK". next, 3 foot southern copperhead. getting from under a persons washer, reached to get tail tagged, left fore arm. next, tailing 4 foot EDB. don't know what happened. but it hurt. left wrist. bad bite. allmost died from SHOCK. so there it is. way to many bites, far to short of time. I no longer tail any snakes. I do head. but only if I have to. not for fun. Thank you all from SHHS for telling me how it is. I realy am a good person. Just slow. LOL. Thanks Spanky P.S. I am not a good speller. sorry

Jeeeezzzz,
Ok, well at least your honest and willing to share your mistakes...I would like to suggest that you get some shift boxes. And really its quite rare that you should ever have to put your hands on the snakes.
good luck, be safe

I should have also metioned..14 almost 15 years my husband and I have maintained venomous herps, and no bites...although several scary moments and a few close calls( my husband was biten when he was 9 by an Agkistrodon c). If you really think things through and have the right equipment and techniques, its much safer than you've been so far.

Just a suggestion-- STOP KEEPING HOTS-- I personally dont own any but if I got taged what 5-6 times I might take a hint. No offense or anything but there are lots of interesting/beautiful species out there that are non venomous and might be a little safer for you. Just my opinion.

It is fine that you insist on keeping hots, just please tell me you are over 18 and doing it legally, you need to be accountable of yourself in order to not make the venomous community look even worse.
Other than that, may I suggest you keep a few easier species? What you have been tagged by are very fast, aggressive snakes. Have you been through the pigmy's, and copperheads yet?
Also, alot of you will probably nail me for this, but I find many arborial vipers easy to deal with. They are more dangerous, but atleast they dont come darting out of the cage at you. By this I mean alot of the Trimeresurus ssp, etc. I am hoping to get a second opinion on the statement I just made, because I was just judging this upon myself, and my experiences. On a daily basis, I deal with large Naja sp, and well, it makes most of the Trims feel very easy. Not to mention all 11 trims I have kept would cling to the branch, no reason to touch them, you just move the branch.
Also, proper equipment is a must, Hooks and trap boxes I find as the biggest essentials. I also have bags, and tongs as well though, which are also fairly helpful. The best peice of equipment by far, is the trap box, as mentioned in a previous reply, it minimizes handling, and if you need to coax the snake into the box, a long hook does it safely. If you must tube the animal for inspection, the tongs and hooks work well for the job, or put a blockable hole, the diameter of the tube in the trap box, so the snake can just go in by itself, or do the same procedure with the bag. I rarely use my bags, unless its field work.
Hope this helps,
Chris

Thank you Chris. And yes I am 41 years old. I put all my info on my profile. (unlike others) And my pic. is on there, (NOT A SNAKE) Anyway, Yes I have and still have coppers, and no I have never had a pigmy. don't care for them. I like arborial vipers, and plan to get some. As far as making hot keepers look bad, (SORRY) Some of the bites I have stayed home and bared it out. some I tryed to and could not. As I have said before, I take a venom shot once a week, and I have for a year now. It helps. The last bite was by in EDB, and it got me good. left wrist. I did have to stay in the hospital for 4 days. but most of the bad stuff, was gone in two days. I have been in the hospital,4 times in the last three years from the bites. ( YES TO MUCH) I will not be telling you all about any more bites, becouse there will not be anymore bites. I am not going to change the types of snakes I keep. I'm going to change the way I keep them. Make since.? "does to me" Good advice is hard to get when it comes to handling. you just larn from your mistakes. sometimes the hard way. I now know what I was doing wrong, and I have stopped doing it. should be no more bites. (RIGHT)???? And again please keep sending your advice. P.S. I like the hide boxs. Thank you all. Spanky

I am sure your a nice guy, but your setting yourself up for this abuse! I got popped by a cottonmouth a few years ago and it hurt like hell and I swore that I would never let it happen again. Taking hits like you claim will shorten your life most certailey and will cause vascular problems at around age 50. Bill Hasst is very unusual and is one of a kind. The venom your injecting yourself with is slowly breaking down your vessles and a stroke is sure to come within a couple years!!! Allen Friesten Phd UNLV
