Antivenin is around $2000.00 a vial, for that reason alone most of the folks on this site don't keep Australian elapids.

Depends on what species your looking at, Acanthophis rugosus or Acanthophis laevis? Both are commonly imported from Indonesia/Papua New Guinea. A. rugosus comes from the drier areas near Meruake, PNG while A. laevis is more of a rain forest dweller. I've never had any issues with getting fresh wild caught specimens acclimated. I bred A. rugosus last year and the neonates took day old pinks for their first meal. I should hopefully have litters of A. rugosus and A. laevis born in the fall. The venom is a strong post synaptic neurotoxin that will cause respiratory paralysis very quick. You should also have a close source of CSL Polyvalent in the event of an emergency. In all, these are wonderful snakes that thrive well in a naturalistic enclosure.

Hey Joe, Nice pic with you and the Dendroaspis. Flip flops? LOL Better you than me. I know you are a very good safe keeper, I am just messing with you.
Take care, hope to see you in June in Columbia.

They make a gaboon strike seem slow. And having have kept both I would have to say my Laevis are hands down supreme ambush predators. I have never even heard a mouse pip from the adders cages. And as todd pointed out, no room for error snakebites from these are life threatening buisness (not that others arent) and they drop live feeders at an astonishing rate. I love them personally, but the only elaps I keep anymore are the abstract ones (kraits, adders, water cobras, corals etc) and they are some of the more interesting of the bunch. Take it slow with these guys but overall even the wc ones seem to acclimate very well. Good luck,
Jared

Jay, in your Profile it says: "How many years have you been keeping venomous reptiles?"
And you answered: "i have not kept them but have worked with eastern diamondbacks, microchipping them, studying them, etc."
This makes me wonder if you should start venomous keeping with a Death Adder ?
Microchipping diamondbacks does very little in teaching you how to safely keep a Death Adder in captivity. Gosh, I am sounding like Rob C, LOL !
At the very least, you should find a Mentor who can teach you safe captive husbandry. I know several very experienced keepers who have been bitten by Death Adders, and have some concern that your lack of experience could be very dangerous. Death Adders are very unforgiving snakes if you make a mistake.
Best Regards
John Z

valid point. however, working with EDB's and studying them shows my sincere, professional intrerest in venomous animals. i do not drink, do drugs, or "show off" my herps. i also do not believe in freehandling hots or handling them at all. i have complete, total, 100% respect for all herps, hots included.
the worst that can happen if i get bitten by a death adder? i die. no big deal. we all go sometime and i would rather go via death adder than sitting on bedsores in the geriatric ward with tubes up my nose. i have no family, live alone, am over 50, so it makes no difference. should i die, i will have left clear, precise instructions on the cage and in the snake room re: whom to call so that the snake may be removed calmly and correctly with no harm done to the adder.
life itself is much more unforgiving than any death adder.

That response to say the least was pretty morbid and shows a lack of care for the venomous community as a whole.
