You beat me to it Joe. Think about the Venomous keepers as a whole. Your "accident" could/would jeopardize the rights of others to possibly keep venomous snakes. The hobby is larger than just one person. Think for all of us. I am also fond of Acanthophis and although I have kept vipers in the past, I am reluctant jump into Acanthophis for many of the reasons mentioned. Acanthophis are similar to vipers in many ways, but are Elapids they do not ride a hook particularly well and strike AMAZINGLY fast. That, accompanied with the extreme price and difficulty possibly attaining the CSL antivenin has caused me to refrain from attaining any until a different time. Take care and be careful, for all of us.

Mr. Williams:
This is a direct quote from your profile:
What advice do you have for new venomous keepers ?
"do not drink, do drugs, or try to show off with hots. you will get bitten and make the whole herp community suffer, animals included."
Your death from a bite, although for some reason not bothersome to you, would affect the herp community in a negative way.

just because the collective "you" fear death does not mean that i do. morbid? the word is reality. you, too, will go one day, as we all will.
and since when is hot-herp keeping limited to the golden few? i could own a death adder for years and never get bitten, while half the complacent golden few could die tomorrow from bites delivered by one of their hots. many seasoned professionals have died from bites, a sad reality which in no way governs or determines what will or will not happen to me. if the collective you wish to protect hot keepers, then perhaps your efforts would be better spent cracking down on greedy breeders who sell anything to anybody anywhere and breed their herps as fast as possible to make a buck. talk about giving a business a bad name . . .
after 50 years of snake ownership and a deep appreciation of all reptiles (not to mention years of volunteer work with selected herps in schools and other places to further education on reptiles) i feel i am justified in acquiring a death adder.

I certainly was not telling you you can not, or even should not. I only want you to think about the venomous hobby/community as a whole. The attitude that "if I die, who cares", does not think about the rest of us. We care, not necessarily about your life, but our rights. Once again as I stated before, and state to everyone, "be careful", your actions can and do have an impact on the rest of the community.

who died and made you king? do you speak from the mount?
and of course you do not care if someone dies, for such a death might somehow impinge upon your very own personal hobby of hot-herp keeping. the death of others can be so inconvenient for herpers like yourself.

"the worst that can happen if i get bitten by a death adder? i die."
Might be OK with you, but do you have insurance that will reimburse the hospital after your death for the potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars they spend trying to save you?

I think I have never owned a snake or bought a snake and thought if it kills me its my own buisness .On the other hand I never thought about how deadly a snake was before I bought it.Well mabie I skipped some sawscales once. The truth is at 50 years old a man should know what he wants and if he seeks advice then he should weigh and measure the good and bad .This is not a exclusive club we welcome all serious herpers...........Archie
