Well I think all of you out there who field study for snakes know how frustrating it can be. Here in Missouri, you can go long periods of time without finding a snake, even though you may be busting your rear end in search of them. Well get this---today while walking down a logging road(snake hook in hand) in the middle of the woods, I stopped to take my water bottle out of my back pack and take a drink. It was very hot. After taking my drink and putting my bottle back in my pack, and my pack back on my back(get all that?), I took one step, only one step, and out from practically under my feet slithered an adult snake. And considering it took off like a bat out of hell, it was in the thick brush before I could blink. And to make things even worse, I couldn't even chase it. It slithered directly under a barbed wire fence and onto private property. It was saved by the fence.
What bad luck, first I stand next to the darn thing for probably 2 minutes without seeing it until I practically step on it, and then it saves itself by crossing onto private property. Needless to say, I didn't see anything the rest of the day, and that's how most days go. Anyway, just had to get that off my chest, and I know some of you can relate, at least I hope. By the way, I think it was a Blue Racer(ssp). Good herping---Anthony Adams

A few years back, me and some of my friends were searching for coppers here in West Virginia. When dusk fell upon us, we still hadn't found a single one. As we walked back out the logging road, my friend stumbled and almost fell. Come to find out, he had steped right on an adult copper that rolled under his foot. by the time we realized it, we saw it's tail dissapear beneath a rock the size of my truck. We weren't too upset though, it could have been worse. Chris

Heck, Iv'e missed many snakes in my day,I was at Magnolia Gardens in Georgia, and missed A huge Coachwhip and a Cottonmouth in less than 5 minutes of each other. I was hot, but kept on plugging and ended up with a beautiful pair of Canebrakes. Chewwy

Ah yes, I know the feeling all too well of seeing the biggest and most impressive specimen of it's species get away in the blink of an eye. Last summer I happened upon the largest black racer I've ever seen (or at least partly saw) in my life. It had to have been at least a good 5'. But the instant I knew it was there, I already knew I was there and wanted to be away from me and so shot off through the thick grass. It's one thing chasing a racer over flat ground, but a whole other trying to catch one in tall grass (impossible? maybe). Oh well, better luck this year.
