I'm in Prescott, Az. until mid next week and was hoping to find a juvenile C. Atrox while here visiting, as we do not really have them in Las Vegas. However, I have had no luck yet.... anyone know of any hot spots around here I can check out? Also, to make it more difficult, the temperature here is kinda in a grey area - in Vegas, the Viperids are active at night this time of year, due to the extreme daytime temps. but here, the daytime highs are rarely above the mid 90's and the nights are rather cool, being in the low 70's, or even high 60's - I know Atrox prefers temps. around 85 F. so should I be out more at night, during the day, or at dawn/dusk? I have read that rattlers are rather rare around here, but I have spoken to MANY people who refute that vehemently, but ofcourse, it seems that only the people who don't want to find them or want to kill them are the only ones running across them with any frequency... ANY help or tips would be GREATLY appreciated! Sooner, rather than later would be preferable because I'm only here for a few more days and really would like to add one of these beautiful, moody little gems to my collection, Thanks.

Email me at monte.maderazo@ihs.gov. I was stationed out that way for 3 years. I believe I can point you in the right direction.

Go out at night on the back roads. The nights when there is little moon are the best. You won't have much luck in the daylight hours, but night cruising should turn them up by the dozens.

I just moved away from there a few months back . People there got my hopes up because the made it sound like snakes were everywhere , but 1 1/2 years of looking an no snakes . I also noticed that rodents have gone to nesting in open spots under the edges of big rocks . I took this as a sign that most snakes have bee kiiled off around there . Try just a few miles north .

Wood rat will nest just under big rocks. I have seem many a rat nest and still pulled a half dozen rattlesnakes from the same cut. It's all in the time you go. A few hours after the sun goes down... waning moon....and plenty of time on the backroads will turn them up.

You won't find much in Prescott itself as it is high alpine. However, drop down in elevation and work the roads at night between Skull Valley and Baghdad and you'll see plenty of snakes and even the odd gila monster. I was just up there again a month and a half ago and, as always, had a great time :). If you have time, Vulture Mine road running out of Wickenberg is another great road.
While you are in Prescott, go into the square at the center of town and check out an art gallery called Van Gogh's Ear. Lots of weird art for sale including some really cool herp (and other creatures) art. One of my favorite galleries in the world. :)
Cheers
