Out of curiosity, how many of you out there keep Southern Pacific rattlesnakes?

What kind of temperment do your guys' specimens have? I ask this because I've heard and read everywhere that Southern Pacific's are extremely defensive yet out of the numerous specimens I've encountered, almost all of them have been exceptionally calm. I can't say the same for the red diamondbacks around my house...

As long as I am not messing with him he does pretty good. Other times I can just be in the room and he will rattle till I leave. He will kill me if I slip up, that I am sure of. I've placed rats in with him he didn't even have time to smell or check out and will bite and held on, he will not eat them. He was just biting heat and movement IMO. As I said if I slip up and give him a chance I don't think he will dry bite or let go quickly.
Adult snake.

I find that they're like most species of rattlesnakes. You will get a variation in demeanors from separate individuals. Some are fairly complacent while others are wired up and fired up.
I agree with Scott's post. I had my hands on a couple of them earlier today and was saying to one of my staff that I would really not want to take a hit from one of these.
