I went to the Hamburg show yesterday for the first time in three years and was a bit suprised by what I found.
Before, the show seemed to have many more venomous animals being offered and a larger diversity of species being represented.
Yesterdays' show gave me the appearance that Hamburg is slowly gravitating towards the more typical show with a large portion being devoted to Geckos, Bearded Dragons and Ball Pythons.
Did I just choose the wrong one to attend or is the demand for venomous slowly dying?
P.S. If anyone knows what happened to the older diabetic gentleman who had to go to the ER I'd love to hear that he is alright. I sat beside him until the ambulance came. I am very concerned since he seemed quite ill and would love to hear a happy ending.

I live in Florida.
Friday I had an 8am root canal. After the appt I said heck with it and told my GF to get ready. At 1:45pm the 4 of us (2 kids) were on the road. After fighting horriable down poors in the Carolina's and an accident on 95 we arrived outside Hamburg around 3:30AM. I don't remember the hotel we first tried but it was SOLD OUT! I back tracked an exit or 2 and found a roach motel, didn't care at that point as all I wanted was sleep and was only staying a few hours. We must of only got 2:45 mins of sleep. We arrived at the show around 8:15 with a pretty long line forming. By the time the show opened the line was all the way to the street and stayed that way for over an hour after the show.
I picked up a few Albino Westerns, Rhino, Gab for a friend of mine who I am visiting now (Carolina's) for a few days on my way back to Florida. I picked up an AZ Mtn King and one of our kids got a Gecko. I wanted some Red pigmys but they were just born so I passed. There really wasn't much for me but a better selection than 2 years ago when we came (To both shows). I was hoping to build up my Rattlesnake collection but not much on CB 09 stuff! Don't ask me why I leave Florida to go to a HOT show when I got Victory Reptiles, Glades and a few others right down the road. (I guess I thought I would find something they don't have) Hamburg IMO after 3 shows is not worth it for me. No vendors ever seems to have much CB babies and some don't offer much for the money.
It was still fun to get away for a few days but that's probably my last time at Hamburg. (Of course I said that the past 2 times but thought I'd give it one more chance, again) Even looking for other HOT's besides rattlesnakes I can't say it was much better.
I wish there was a show Venomous breeders showed up to in force. I've been to SC show, can't say it was much better but only been once. I'm giving it another try this year and again, may be my last time.
On the way back I was going to stay in Hershey but after being told prices for 2 star hotels were in the mid $100.00's to low $200.00 we just drove on. Little did I know dropped my wallet at the hotel we checked rates at but not near the office. About 45 mins away I went into a hotel to get a room and that's when I realized I had lost it. In a panic I raced back and of course missed my exit and went way out of the way. Figuring someone had already found it and was buying everything online by now. About an hour later we showed up at the hotel. My GF checked the office but hey had stepped away. I went and checked where I knew I left it and couldn't find it. I went back to the office and around that time the staff came back, thank God someone who works there had found it and turned it in. I gave her $20.00 for being a good person and thanked her. (My way home and life was in that wallet)
Anyway... I would like to see these shows find a city that can handle the crowds (Enough hotels) but on the other hand I'm not coming back anytime soon. (I will if Venomous vendors get serious about the show) I noticed Victory Reptiles didn't bother with the show this year who usually brings Hot's)
All was not lost I did end up buying a few things from someone on the way back home.(I wont post names unless he wants to chime in)

Whew Scott.
I'm gonna stop whining about the 7 hours it took me to get there from Va LOL!
Speaking of the Columbia SC show, I was thinking about going to the next one. Is it as big as Hamburg?
Its only 4 hours so even if it is on par with what this past Hamburg show was then it would be worth it to me.
Thanks all for the input!

More Venomous IMO at SC and the Vendors seem to like it more as well. I did find it strange in 2007 when I went that some of the HOT vendors just seemed to show up later in the day and were not ready when the doors opened. I asked around and it sort of seemed like a common thing. I hung around for several hours and they finally showed up. I guess I am spoiled with Daytona just over and hour away. I would really like to see a really large Venomous show (one day) and not just a handful of tables (Hamburg) and a touch more at SC. I'll give it another try as I said this year.

I would suggest that you give the November Columbia, South Carolina show a try. The quality of venomous snakes has increased greatly, as has the variety of snakes for sale, and the number of venomous vendors.
The Repticon Team has done a great job of upgrading that show, and making it attractive to vendors and visitors alike ! Also, I think the problem with large venomous vendors not showing up, or showing up late seems to have been solved. That one show in the past had some conflicts due to competing shows in Columbia and Texas, and vehicle problems the vendors had. I do not see that happening again.
Not to mention the Southern Hospitality and laid back atmosphere of a Southern Show. It really is very different from the hectic Hamburg shows.
Also, that November show will feature the SHHS Banquet, with great door prizes, a great guest speaker, and some great catered food, following the Saturday show.
Best Regards
John Z

Scott,
If you are still looking for hard to find rattlesnakes send me a email at Adamanteus70@aol.com
The SC shows in November and June are great shows, I vend at both and have been since 2000. I think the selection has grown greatly. Lots of dry goods and lots of venomous and non venomous.
I think if you go you will like it.

I went, I saw, I came home. Pretty ho-hum selection; very crowded and stifling atmosphere. Picked up crickets and mealworms for the zoo education dept. so that should put me in the good graces of the gals in the gift shop for a while (hopefully). Really made me miss the Southern shows - can't wait for Columbia.
