Now that the weather is cooling off, it's great being outside enjoying nature.
If you like hiking, golfing or working in the yard, the chances are good that you've had a close encounter with a snake. Snakes are most active during the warmer seasons, spring and summer, so it's good to be aware of snakes common to Florida.
There are 46 snakes that are native to Florida, and only six of these are poisonous. Five of these can be found in our area. Even though most are non- venomous, many people have a fear of snakes (ophidiophobia).
It's important to keep in mind that snakes are beneficial because they feed on rodents (rats and mice), insects, frogs, slugs, skinks, birds, lizards and other snakes. An added benefit to keeping the non-venomous snakes around is that they often keep the poisonous ones away. For example, the king snake will eat venomous snakes, like rattlesnakes, and is immune to their venom.
