I'm not sure if any of you noticed this or not, but all the NC shows are not allowed to have venomous snakes there. But as I walked around at the show Sunday, I noticed a few Mangove snakes there. If you are not aware of this species, they are a rear-fanged venomous species. Are rear fanged species looked at in a different light? Or was this a case of people not knowing what they're looking at? Just curious.......

I noticed those snakes and mentioned them to a couple of other vendors. There were also a pair of Hydronastes gigas there. Yes, I know that both this species and the Mangroves are not considered dangerously venomous, but they are venomous just the same. I've also seen(not at this show, but others in NC)Black Widows and Death Stalker scorpions for sale, which can be lethal or at least significantly dangerous; what is the difference in those and snakes with medically-significant venom?
I was vending at this show for the first time, and it was definitely a "bust" for most vendors. Big crowds, no one buying anything other than toys and such for the kiddies. I didn't even make enough to cover the cost of the table, and I know I wasn't the only one who sold very little at this show.

It was a bust for me..... It was a awesome buying show though for Vendor to Vendor sells great unheard of deals WoW....... As far as rear fanged I know for a fact in Cabarrus County it was illegal to posses any rear fanged species according to Cabarrus County web site onder animal control department. I had some animals I left at home for that reason.

I know what you mean about the scorpions and spiders. Some of that stuff can be worse than rattler or cobra venom, yet they get sold like there's nothing bad about them. But these are the same shows that ban turtles and torts. NC laws and the people that over see the laws are a bunch of clue-less idiots in my opinion. And I know what you mean about the show being a bust. Several friends of mine that had tables there said the same thing. From a buyers point of view though, because it was a bust, towards the end of the show, there were some great deals. It's the first time at a show where I saw pied ball pythons for $700.

WOW! It's funny because that guy realized that there wasnt much being sold, but in order to make some money, he lowered his prices. I mean, if I was there selling stuff that I produced, I'd do the same thing. I'd make my prices lower than everyone elses so that I can make money. Most of the breeders there that were crying that they didnt make any money, were also the ones that didnt want to work any sort of deals. I mean, I talked to one guy there about buying an animal he had for sale for $800. I told him that all I could afford on it was about 750. He said the most he'd knock off of the price was $25. WTF are you kidding me? But getting back to my original topic here,...how are rear fanged animals getting past NC fish and wildlife? I mean, I saw a few people there that I was 99.9% sure were under cover cops trying to see what was being sold. I guess they just are not that educated on what they're suppose to be looking for??

I don't know about undercover cops looking for illegal animals, although I'd be willing to bet that if there WERE any such officers there, they'd be clueless as to what they were looking at, unless it was something obvious like a large Diamondback Rattler or a Sulcatta tort. Most would probably not kmow a Mangrove from a Kingsnake or a FWC from any old run-of-the-mill Colubrid, like a Pine or Rat Snake. There most likely WERE undercover people looking to nab thieves, though, especially on Sunday. There was at least one couple, plus an individual in a wheelchair, stealing animals on Saturday. The vendor across from me had over 200.00 worth of animals stolen off her table by the couple, and since she didn't sell much at all, she really had a bad weekend. I'd say that 80% of the crowd that showed up were just curiosity seekers looking for something to do with their kids for a Saturday or Sunday. Lots of people who came by my table didn't even like snakes or other reptiles and there were probably more people there who were totally creeped out by the animals than I've ever seen at any show. I asked a few why they'd come to a place they KNEW would be chock-full of snakes, if they were afraid of snakes, and they told me that they were just looking for something to amuse the kids for the afternoon. Most of the people who walked through the door had no intentions of buying anything at all. Bill Love probably did better than most of us, since he brough a load of cheap herp-related kiddie toys, and he sold a lot of those, which is pretty smart, actually. It makes me really appreciate our SC shows, though, to realize just what types of animals are missing from the ones in NC, and don't even get me started on Georgia shows!

I agree. I know what you mean about the people that came to treat it like a damn freak show. That sort of thing really makes me mad. Oh well. It's strange how bad this one was because the one in the spring was soo good for many vendors.

I heard that it was only illegal to DISPLAY venomous, and many vendors had them "under the table". I personally know someone that brought home a monocle cobra from the show.I could be wrong about the display thing, so I'm not going to mention anyone. I picked up 4 new snakes from that show. Marty
