There are lots of stories about somebody getting drunk and/or showing off and consequently getting bit. That's old news.
I'm more interested in techniques people have come up with to NOT get tagged. Anyone here have a special, consistent practice--meditation, exercise, martial arts, etc.--that you engage in before entering your hot room and dealing directly with potentially lethal snakes for feeding, cleaning and treatment?

Ok I channel my chi from the dead grand father of an ancient ninja warrior who was a mystic,LOL.Fact is I require my wife not to talk or yell at me when I am in there If she is mad at me she knows to leave me alone in there,So I am in there alot........LOL.I follow strict protocal That is how to be safe.No one enters the room but me when cleaning cages unless my son is helping me he has his own snake room and has the same protocalls. If you use the right tools do not drink and common sense you will be fine.It depends on what you keep trap boxes shift boxes and such will also be helpfull .They do not fly so you have the advantage.I have kept hots so long that it is as normal to clean a cage as brush my teeth.STICK TO STRICT SAFETY PROTOCALLS AND ALL WILL BE WELL.

I usually drink abt 4 Long Island Ice tea's before I enter my Hot Room, and start cleaning/feeding.
Just kidding, Archie's advice is right on!

I deal with CB stuff. Honestly, in most cases I've noticed CB snakes seem to be calmer than their WC brothers and sisters (for the most part). I guess I also check in on them at least 12 times a day if not more so they are used to that routine and seem to know it's just me. Don't get me wrong, I still get the bad attitudes from time to time but nothing that I am scared of that I need mental prep for or whatever...
I respect what the snake can do, I don't fear the snake.

These are some of the rules I follow:
I never work venomous after dark.
I never work venomous when I am home alone.
I don't play music in the herp room when I am working venomous.
I do not take my cell phone into my herp room.
If I feel the need for a drink, I will put off working venomous for another day.
Distractions will happen no matter how many precautions you take. The trick is to minimize them as much as possible.
I can't tell you how many times I have received a call that such and such a friend was bitten while working with their venomous snakes at 11 - 12 or later at night. That puts them in the wonderfully enviable position of being treated by an overworked overtired emergency room staff who may have zero experience with venomous bites and will have difficulty reaching anyone on the phone who may be able to help them.
You really need to do everything that you can ahead of time to better your chances of safely working with your venomous snakes/lizards/invertebrates and your chances of getting proper treatment if something goes wrong.
Just what works for me.

Nothing special as far a mental preparation, other than making sure I'm not too tired or thinking about something else while I'm handling.

Karl is on point. When you enter your snake room you agree to shut out the world for the most part. (Phones etc...) It's you and the snake only.

Karl is correct and these are the protocalls I use and a few more.I take for granted that safty protocalls are well known so I did not list them. The one I do not do is the after dark .That is when I have time to be in there. The part about cell phones is spot on .Only a pure dumb ass would hunt or work any venomous snake after drinking or useing drugs perscription or not.The time to be sharp is when opening a venomous cage.Music is spot on as well

Venom 1 works 9-5 from what I am told. A midnight bite by an exotic is not the best time. They will get you the antivenom but not as fast as say from 9 to 5.

Venom 1 is stored in my cell phone. The hospital is set in my GPS under emergency (incase of panic and GF is freaking out) What works for me is to pretend that you just got bit, now what do I do? Go through the motions like they taught us kids for Earthquakes or whatever... Have a plan!
